There are fewer than 20 known examples of this die marriage (yeah, I have two, how cool is that?). So...chances are it was a catastrophic failure due to a very flawed obverse die. This die marriage was the third and last use of this particular obverse die.

sorry, no closeups. The cud coin is 1500 miles away and staying there. The EDS coin is headed back to me soon.

Well, maybe not quite that many. I once owned a G-6 piece that I cherried within one week of the discovery of this die marriage by Dr. Eric Gutscher. It was a late die state with the cud, and was the second, confirming specimen. I eventually sold that coin to Barndog. I later cherried a G-4 piece, also with the cud, and sold that piece to a Tennessee collector. I now own a really nice VF-25 example with the cud, and a spectacular AU-55 EDS, without the cud. So I have only owned four examples of this die marriage, total.

when I bought the late die state example posted, which was a couple years ago, that was the 13th known specimen so said the best research I could muster together (consulted MrHalfDime and that Tennessee collector). There may be other, unreported examples out there, but barring that, the EDS VF-25 example I posted is the 14th known specimen.

BTW, I met up with the Tennessee collector on the floor at FUN, and he was complaining to me about the cost to retrofit his loupe with a D-ring.

It seems somewhat interesting to me that the earlier die stage coin is so poorly struck up on the reverse particularly where the eagle's left wing meets the body and shield. Do all of the EDS examples show this weakness?

the EDS example in the Logan-McCloskey book demonstrates the same strike characteristics where the wing meets the shield. Maybe if MrHalfDime would take a look at his spectacular EDS coin he might be able to make it "three to a match"

I've got a 30' but just can't get a pic decent enough to ask for attribution. S4 & S5 are the only two I can tell have NOT been repunched and S7 looks alot like S6 in Barndogs coin. Reverse scroll alignment also looks same as Barndogs but the arrow heads are triangles, 5 C looks the same. Guess from the description anyone?

Edited to add: Break from rim through S6 toward center of headband. Break forming below S8. Rev- low D and almost touching serif of E. F filling in at bottom right side of letter.
