Now its my turn I work in a family business with my uncles. Today a friend of one of them approached me about 5 cigar boxes of loose coins his mother has that she got from her mother. He said theyre looking to sell them but dont wanna go to a dealer, asked if i'd be interested in checking them out and possibly selling them for him with me getting a 10% cut. He told me theres gotta be thousands of coins and hes seen ones as far back as 1850. Talk about a thrill for me. I told him i'd love to do it and he said he'll bring them over to my work next time he visits his mother in a few weeks. Will update further once i recieve coins to go thru.

10%? Two comments: Family should be free, no charge.
Not real close family should be 25%. Remember there is
a bunch of work required to sell on ebay or other venues.

I've had this happen a couple of times and there always is a great thrill of anticipation. Usually doesn't turn out to be much, but it's fun going through stuff. Hope this one turns out to be a mother load hoard of unmolested type stuff that nobody's seen for 100 years.

This is an important point. When I've played this role, the owners sometimes can't resist 'sprucing up' their coins a bit in anticipation of the assessment.

When I was selling coins at the shows, 10% was often the best mark-up I could get. When everybody is buying the Gray Sheet, which makes them think that entitles them to buy and sell coins like a dealer, the mark-ups in the coin business become very low. Here he has a chance to make 10%, and he doesn't even have to risk his own money. I wish I'd had situation all the time.

Avoid believing that "wheat cents and junk silver" are all you get if you end up with lots of it, until you've seen them with your own eyes and filled your mind with the knowledge needed to accurately identify those oddities which are truly part of the hobby of us geeks.

To most, it means nothing. But to some, the thrill is about finding a coin which has an overdate, re-punched mint mark, doubling or other anomalies. This is part of the fun of numismatics and precisely what makes certain coins

I took great pleasure in going through the thousands of coins that my mother saved when she was in her teens and 20s. That being said, her hoard was mainly common wheat cents, common or dateless Buffalo nickels, and junk silver. Selling all that stuff proved to be a real burden.

I got the opportunity to look at a friends collection a few years ago that his grandmother gave him. Mostly low graded common stuff, but I did find him a nice VF 1912S Liberty nickel that was worth saving in a different location. I love going through old stuff like that, even if its not mine and if I wont make anything for it. You have a great opportunity! Keep us posted!

not really being sexist but, generally grandmas usually dont know squat about how to handle old coins
and do occasionally clean the `dirty` ones so they will shine more and look prettier.
best to expect the worse and hope for the best.
