One pound silver eagle questions

Quick question about those large one pound silver eagles.............

http://cgi.ebay.com/3-ONE-POUND-SILVER-ROUNDS-AMERICAN-EAGLE_W0QQitemZ180318428295QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_Bullion?hash=item180318428295&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72:1205|66%3A4|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A200

These things contain 16 troy ounces of silver correct?????
I know one troy pound =12 troy ounces but when they just say pound, don't they mean 16 ounces????

I saw one at a local store marked just like that one and it showed 16 troy ounces on the scale BUT look below:

http://cgi.ebay.com/2000-Silver-Eagle-Huge-1-Troy-Pound-999-Fine-Silver_W0QQitemZ280299063277QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_Bullion?hash=item280299063277&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72:1205|66%3A4|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1308|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A200

How come this one says 1 lb but weights 12 troy ounces? I'm confused......
The one I saw weighed 16 troy ounces.

  • Advertising by the pound is an ebay trick to make you think its 16 ounces, when in fact, it is 12 Troy.

thanks guys but still bugs me the fact that the local B&M store has a troy ounce scale and I picked up the one pound eagle and put it on the scale..................reads 16 oz troy. Weird huh? I'll go back and make sure everything was correct on that scale but its confusing!

Now another time there was a half pound silver eagle. Their scale read 7 something troy ounces so that one was mislabeled by the company selling the eagles but its weird how the one I'm referring to that I saw at my local B&M weighed in at 16.

  • Probably those silver plated copper rounds. Do they say .999 on them?
    Its all relative

Cars, I know about those copper plated rounds your talking about. These just say one pound fine silver.

I sent Deadhorse a question and he answered my questions about this.

Basically some of the rounds if labeled one pound may be of several different weights because these companies weren't regulated very well. Some one pound rounds may have only 12 troy ounces, 14.58 troy ounces, or 16 troy ounces. Weird.

Heres a break down of weight

    24 grains = 1 penny weight
    20 penny weights = 1 troy oz.
    480 grains = 1 troy oz.
    12 troy ozs. = 1 troy lb.

    1 troy oz = 31.104 Grams
    1 penny weight = 1.552 Grams

In 90% silver roll of Halves = 7.23 ozs.
roll of quarters = 7.23 ozs.
roll of dimes = 3.61 ozs.
In 40% silver roll of halves = 2.95 ozs.

  • Like the large silver ingots shaped like paper money, I believe there is more than
on producer. You probably saw one made by someone different.

I believe a standard $10 bank roll of BU 90% quarters also contain 7.23 ozt.

IwantnonCCs, I believe you are right. There may be many various makers, some that are "crafty" and put one pound fine silver to trick people into thinking they may be getting 16 troy ounces and then those that are more honest and put 16 troy ounces.
