I'm cracking open 330 rolls of Westward Journey Nickels, think I will find any errors?

jessewvujessewvu Posts: 5,065 ✭✭✭✭✭
I figured that holding onto these things for 4 years is long enough and I am going to open the 165 two roll nickel sets I have before taking them to the bank because they are pretty much worthless in OGP. My bank doesn't want rolls because they "take up too much room in the safe"... I don't know what that means because don't all their coins go into the safe?

I will give each roll about 3 seconds glance for clipped dies, think I will find one? These nickels are 90% buffalo and 10% Ocean in View. That beaks down to 13,200 nickels. There has GOT to be at least one clipped planchet in the lot. If I find more than 1, I'll have a giveaway (just because I don't have any clipped planet coins).

  • Look for MS 66 and higher quality also! Struck through grease errors, struck through debris etc.

Don't throw away any "speared bison." I'll give you face + 10% for them. image

It's looking like they could all be errors if you ordered the rolls from China.

I looked through four rolls so far, 2 P and 2 D and found the following coins:

The first coin I found 8 of, the second coin I found 6 of, and the last coin I only found 1.

I'd take a little longer amount of time for your look. A MS66 coin is probably easily $100/per coin. A MS67 would probably be worth a grand or more.

Think about it like this... you held them for 4 years; what's another week or two?

  • For the Ocean P do not get excited at any struck through grease ones as about 50% are like that. It's cool for your own enjoyment, but as far as a valuable error. . .not for these.

Why in the world do you have 165 2-roll sets???

Are you a dealer or was this a speculative play?

I have a case of the Ocean in View that I never opend 20 or so buffalo two roll boxs and I am not a dealer just like to buy rolls you may not get them at a later time. You just never know you should see my 2008 rolls I think I went overboard on them. Nickels , Cents. image

    << <i>Why in the world do you have 165 2-roll sets??? >>

This was the absolute height of my ignorance as a self proclaimed flipper. I was a complete fool and ordered several hundred (~900) of these sets thinking I could make $5 a set profit. The problem is nobody told me I would actually have to sell them all to make money (that’s a joke you guys)! I probably lost a grand or two on them but I learned a lot doing it.

I might take a few rolls out every night and see what is in the rolls. Maybe I'll find a new variety or something cool. I'll keep you all posted, WITH PICTURES!

  • These are a very popular design but I'm afraid there are just way too many for any to have a premium in my lifetime.

Looking for a MS67-68 will be very frustrating as these are really tough to find in MS65 and up.

You'd likely spend more money in grading fees then you'd ever recapture with a MS67 not to mention your time.

There are mutiple example with chips and gouges but only the speared bison is recognized as a varity.

Wow. Learning how large the number 13,200 is the 'hard way'.

The 2005 obverse is among the best in US coinage. It's a shame it only ran for one year. It beats the current obverse, that's for sure.

That's good advice. In 1996, you could buy mint bags of 2,000 1980-s S.B.A. dollars for $2050 (shipped). I thought it was a great deal; search for possible varieties, and put a lot of points on my AMEX card. I searched through about 20 bags over the course of a few months and while I didn't make any money at it, it was a good learning experience.

Put some thought into your setup. Find the right lighting and magnifying glass to prevent eye fatigue. The right sitting position. And take breaks. If you spend an average of 10 seconds per coin, that's 6 coins a minute, 360 an hour... reviewing 13,200 nickels would take almost 40 hours.

I believe you'll find about $660 worth of change. Good luck with the hunt though.

    Jessewvu,

Yesterday one of the coin channels was offering mint bags of 1000 (I think they were handshake nickels) and they were saying "retail value is over $1000 per bag" and they were selling the 1000 coin $50 face bags for $249 each!

After you search some you might try putting some of your 2 roll sets on ebay and see what you get.

  • please make sure you take a break or two while doing this... two reasons: your eyes will hurt otherwise, and you could miss errors if you zone out at all!

I have 32 roll sets of the buffalo nickels and figure if I bide my time I might break even. No big woppie, win some, lose some and they only cost $8.95 as I remember.

Yep, $8.95 each. I have my dinolite set up such that I can slide the nickel under the unit and see the entire thing, just magnified A LOT. I spin the coin about three times looking for cracks, cuds, clips, and overall strike, then flip it over, do the same. Right now, I am only giving the P mint coins about 2 seconds each side because they all suck. The D mint coins seem to be much better and have more interesting errors such as cracks and such.

I am trying to open two sets (4 rolls) a night. I opened a US Mint canvas bag and am throwing all the coins in there. I will probably sell that bag for weight at face value if anyone on the BST wants them. Otherwise, off to my bank where they will count if for free.

So far, I have found 1 coin that MIGHT grade MS65 if I got it graded, about a half roll of cracked die coins, some cuds, and that's about it. That was out of 4 sets, 8 rolls.

I think somewhere along the lines we've all made blunders with trying to make a buck or two. I'm right along with you on the "buying alot of WJ Nickel sets thinking they might have a shot at turning a few bucks one day." Didn't buy quite the amount you bought, but still have all of them. I've got OBW and Mint rolls laying all around the house. I might just bust some open and take a peek as you are doing.

Good luck with 'em and hope you find alot of keepers. Keep us posted.

What? Are you sure about this? If that is correct that would explain a lot of the challenges I have had making my collection 'pay for itself' and also why I have a bunch of stuff (like small Mint bags of Westward Journey nickels) that don't seem to helping me acquire coins that I need. And here I was just thinking they were just not popular right now! image Also...and this is one thing I am really ascared of, is that would mean my better half is right, that on order for my 'investments' to pay off I really have to sell them and realize a profit.

FYI just kidding on all of this (except for the Mint bags of nickels...gotta do something with those things!) and for the grammatically correct folks yes I know ascared is not a proper word...but I live in the south and everyone knows what you are talking about just like when you say 'I ciphered the numbers on that and...'

Jesse that's why I never wanted to move to West Virgina. Road kill and collecting nickel rolls are for the Hatfields and the McCoys.

    Good Luck Jesse.
