ASE Reverse Proof and Anni set.

I've thinking about buy one of these or perhaps some of the graded coins, but the milk spot thing scares me. Are the odds that a coin or set would be showing signs by now? Or are any of these ever truly in the clear? Thanks

Welcome! You're never out of the woods from the potential of spotting, but if you like the coin you should buy it anyway, IMO.

Welcome and I would not hesitate to buy the set if you like themimage

I have owned a number of these and the spotting is a major issue. I would recommend purchasing an ungraded set, and then examining it closely under sunlight after you receive it. If it exhibits the slightest bit of spotting then return it. However, the safest way to proceed is to not even bother with buying any of these.

Ask before you buy. probably a lot of these on the bay have some sort of spots unless specified.

I beg to differ. I have been selling a set a week (NGC 69's & 70's) and none have spots. I originally had 2 PCGS sets and 3 of the 6 coins from those sets had spots so I gave them away as gifts (full disclosure)

I would not mention in an auction that a coin didn't have a defect......It would be more appropriate to say if it did have problems

    OOPS.....Edited to say...... WELCOME!

You never know if they will pop up, but buy 'em if you like 'em. They sure are nice.

Buy it if you like it.

I wouldn't slab it. Never...... The vast majority of my slabbed silver eagleshave or are developing some type of of "surface malfunction". The ones in OGP look perfect.

Anyone know what the unopened sets are bringing these days?

I sold my beautiful complete proof set including the reverse proof because I was so worried about spotting. I have had several spot and got tired of replacing them.

I have many graded and ungraded sets. The only ones that have developed spots are the ones that were slabed. It also seems that they are most likely to spot within a year or two after being minted.

Welcome from me, too! But listen, don't get discouraged from all this. The RP is a stunning coin and if you are at all inclined, I'd get one. Prices are also dropping, which is nice. Do get it in OGP, though (I'm not sure if OGP prices are also dropping. Anyone?). Spotting problems appear to be fewer AND the coins just look better in OGP anyway. One thing the Mint does very well, IMO, is produce great packaging, and I've never understood why people are so crazed to get modern mint issues slabbed. The vast majority are going to be 69s or 70s (a difference which is often impossible to determine with the naked eye), so why mess around with it?

    Welcome to the forums!

As others have said, your chances of avoiding spots are much higher in OGP. As for sitting on the fence for a while, do searches on the forums. This issue has been discussed many times with many real world reports.

A while ago there was a monetary reward offered for finding a solution to spotting. Has this been claimed?
