<< <i>The guy with his face caught in the blender blades, is ahhhh, creepy >>

I never thought about that Belgian design that way... I always referred to it as the "clockface" design 'cause it looks kinda like the hands of a clock.

    "Blenderface" is even funnier. image

I have no idea what they were trying with that.

But hey, at least not everybody is a slave to tradition. Countries get innovative with their designs. Many innovations turn out ugly, but that's better than boring.

jacksongto- I tried to respond to the PM you sent me on a different topic, but it looks as you don't have Private Messages activated?

I mean, you sent me one, but it looks like you need to go into your profile and click to "allow" them before I can respond in kind.

Foreign, but ugly, the Eagle looks like it is puking:

Curiously though, a Karl Goetz pattern, and as such, the only one I presently own of all of his works.

If I didn't know it was Belgian I would have guessed "Soviet Union" they like that art-deco sort of minimalist what-ever the hell its called look. I love the Soviet propaganda posters.

For some reason this reminds me of when anyone gives my mother something she really doesn't like but is trying to be polite, "ohh!! isn't that nice!!" while she is trying to figure out what it is and what to do with it.

Dig those Live Oaks by the way, sent you a regular email with some of the pictures I took down here in New Orleans

Makes you wonder when, 100 years ago, someone in authority said "Oh, Nice!! that is one sweet design!!"

Also, I will venture that it is not an eagle at all, I think it is some sort of Gargoyle-like sock puppet

<< <i>Although SBA herself is nothing to look at, the coin in proof looks very, very nice. I like the reverse also. Probably the flowing hair coinage was the ugliest ever made--which is one of the reasons it is so cool today but it lasted such a short time because of a huge vote of dissatisfaction from the general public. --Jerry >>

Those have my vote as well Jerry!

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

The SBA and some of the pres bucks are bad, but for some reason im not a big fan of Barber quarters and half dollars, either.

I find the nickel 3 cent piece quite unattractive, particularly the reverse.

Has to be the early 1800s gold. Not attractive at all like the matron head cent, but they're expensive too! I think by flowing hair, the chain cent was the intent. The rest of the flowing hair designs are pretty and simple. You can malign the SBA, but it's an interesting coin and it does look like its subject.

Oh, I don't think that German 25-pfennig piece is in the least bit ugly. I like it. Sure, they had better designs, but that one is nice, like most of their Imperial-era stuff. I guess ugliness is in the eye of the beholder. As to the designer, Goetz, he DID produce some truly ugly medals, but many of them were of a satirical and deliberately ugly nature. His coin designs were decent.

I agree on the early gold- some of those pre-1834 designs were truly uninspiring, at least as far as Lady Liberty is concerned.

See? I mentioned the Classic Head and Matron Head cents, but didn't even think to mention those. Being rare and valuable often gives otherwise-ugly coins a free pass. Geez, look at the Bechtler coins. They don't even HAVE designs. They are crude and ugly and have backwards lettering sometimes. You'd be hard-pressed to find something much uglier.

But I certainly wouldn't turn one down if it was offered to me at a price I could afford! (Which will never happen).

Whaaat!?! OK, the $10 Indian obverse is not fantastic, but otherwise... you must be crazy! image

See? Ugliness truly IS in the eye of the beholder.

SA, that live oak shot is an older sigline I'm recycling. I shot the picture at the Avenue of Oaks on St. Simons Island, GA, when I used to work at the Lodge At Sea Island Golf Club. The present site of the five-star resort was the old Retreat Plantation in antebellum days, and the live oaks were planted by the slaves before the Civil War. It is a beautiful spot.

LM, I get that a lot, most everyone thinks I am a bit off my rocker for thinking that...I just think they are aweful and just not well designed.
