That's a nice find and you got 13!!!! WOW

    They're DDO die-1 and RPM-100, it's a small date over large date (not lg/sm).

You can see on the 0 how the smaller 0 is on top of the larger 0.

The reason people call these large over small is they see that thing (like in your zoomed in pic) that looks like the top of a shorter 6 that looks like it's below the larger 6 but that's a die chip that only shows in certain die states. If your coins don't have that it's better because they're earlier than that die state with the chip.

13 from one roll is a great find!!!!!!! image

Yeowza! That's one wonderful find for sure! What made you decide to buy an UNC 60 roll?
They are dime a dozen and most have been searched several times. Was there a tell?
    thanks and congrats,

Yes the 72 is a DDO 100% sure. Nice find again!

    I think it's DDO die-2.
(It should also show on the date, mostly on the 2)

Can you get a better pic of the rim near the L of liberty?
There's also die-4 which is similar to die-2 and die-7 and much rarer but that one has some small rim chips near the L. I see something there on yours that looks different but need a good pic to be sure. Die-4 is very rare!

    Links to die-2 and 7.

I think yours is stronger than die-7 from looking at liberty, the sep on the BE is stronger, that's why I'm thinking die-2.

I see the prices of the large over small in the catalogue, but what are the prices of the small over large date?

No rim cuds/chips so that ruled out die-4.

The others (like die-3, die-6, die-8) have the rotation in the opposite direction so they're ruled out. Die-1 is stronger. Die-5 is weaker. It must be 2 or 7 but I think yours is stronger than die 7 on the BE so I believe it's die-2.

A super find! You're on a roll! 14 nice DDOs today!!!!!

The 72 is not the red book variety though- is it?
  • GrumpyEdGrumpyEd Posts: 4,749 ✭✭✭
The red book variety is Die-1.

PCGS will attribute this die-2 variety as FS-033.52 or the new number FS-102. (assuming you pay the $ for attribution)

    Four points:

    1. Awesome find, deserving of a YOU SUCK.

    2. The reason they are called Large over Small date is because the die was hubbed by both a Large Date and Small Date hub. Look at the 0 in the date and you can see the size difference. There are proof doubled dies which show this even better, but it is definitely one type over the other.

    3. A few years ago I bought a small hoard of these on eBay, six total, and raw I paid over $100 each. I sent them into PCGS and got two in 64RD and four in 65RD. The 64RDs sold for around $140 and the 65RDs averaged around $275. Your coins should grade 64RD easily and I think I see a few that could be better.

    4. I hope you already asked that seller if he had any more rolls. image

Congratulations! Were the other coins in the roll small dates or large dates?

I bought an entire *circulated* roll of 1960-D small over large date cents in 1965 for $62.50 ($1.25 per coin). I still have about 20 of them but they're not worth nearly as much as uncirculated ones.

    Nice work, there, Hawkeye!

I don't even look for stuff like that anymore, 'cause I can barely read the dates on smaller coins with the naked eye anymore, let alone see RPDs and RPMs and doubling and stuff.

Unless I have my reading glasses.

    *sigh*

I turn 43 this month. Guess it happens to all of us sooner or later. There was a time when I could've cherrypicked that kind of stuff with nothing but the eyesight God gave me. Said eyesight still works, but it needs a bit of help nowadays.
