Picked this up the other day. Still practicing my photo skills and cant quite get the pics as sharp as Goodman or Printz or Truviews....

I love the large S on this variety of half. Just thought I would share some pics.

Feel free to guess the grade....and no peeking...image

    Perfect XF45.

I'm surprised, I thought you had some kind of uber-rarified impossible set going. That's just a plain old really nice collector coin.

    I think it's cool too.
Wasn't the large S normal for San Francisco at the time ?
Can you show a small mint mark variety ?

    Mirabela,

I will take that as a compliment...I think. imageimage I love original eye appealing collector coins as well and will buy them if they present themselves. In fact, I kind of prefer them as I can usually buy many more and I get the same enjoyment out of them as I do high grade coins. What I try to do for the series with multiple types (seated, bust, slq's, trimes) is buy one high grade piece and then enjoy surrounding it with mid grade original eye appealing better dates that have the look I am after. It really makes for fun collecting as they are all very hard to find, but I can still add a coin and not break the bank when a nice circ subtype comes along!! Plus, if it is a duplicate, or a series I LOVE, I will just buy more and add them to the collection and not feel guilty about it.

I know it seems a bit complicated and convoluted, but it took me a while to figure out how my collecting brain works...and this works for me. Some people have problems mixing MS and proof, circ and uncirc. I like the variety. I used to collect series, but that got kind of boring for me. But when I started collecting type, it would bum me out that I could only have one of my favorite designs and then have to collect other types I hated. So I just threw out the ones I didnt like type wise and made my own rules! Very liberating I might add...

Coal, I dont have a pic of the WB-102, it is a bit rarer, but not that bad actually....

Very nice John! I'd guess 40 or 45.

Well, so, are you going to reveal the grade on the holder in which this nice coin lives?

    Nice looking coin Lt image

Good color, nice surfaces, and what looks like a bit of luster left ...

the obverse wear looks 40ish, but based on all attributes, I'd say 45 may be more appropriate

Sorry for the delay....lots of turkey. Coin is a PCGS 45. Given the large amounts of luster remaining I agree with the grade but a 40 wouldn't be out of place.

It's a beautiful coin. I'm not certain who to feel sorry for, but it appears we have very similar collecting patterns.

45 appears to be the most probably grade and I would say PQ for the grade. I like the coin and the collecting strategy reads well. Good luck in preserving original examples and for the record, know that you are not alone in that effort

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • If this is XF-45, it's PQ. I'm alone, but I vote for AU-50.

BTW, I'll buy all XF-40s you have that look like this coin. Stack 'em up...
