When I worked for a large PM firm in the early 80's we had them..... not many, but a few... not popular at the time.
AAAAAaaaaand.. I just picked up 2 Engelhard Prostector Platinum 1 oz'ers!!! Both are 1983's.
I would post a pix but I do not have a camera...Maybe this weekend if my friend shows up.
Unfortunatly.... I also can not find much info about them.....
The old gang remembers them as well..... but no one can remember how long/what years we had them.
Any help would be great!!

As best as I can tell.... Prospectors were made in....
1 oz , 1/2 oz , 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz Silver [1 oz 1982 to 1988.... Fractionals [1985].
1, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 oz Gold [1982 to unknown]....... and 1oz Platinum.[years unknown].
I do have some 1/2 oz , 1/4 oz and 1/10 Gold [1983] and Fractional Silver Prospectors [1985].
These 2 - 1 oz Platinums are the first I have seen in MANYYYY years.....
Had to get them........ picked them up for $900 each.

All of the Gold and Platinum Prospectors, all sizes, all in small plastic, sealed, sleaves with surounding assay certs.
The Silver Prospectors are in Engelhard tubes.....
1 oz at 25 per tube ....... the fractionals in 5 oz tubes.
You will find them all, ocasionally, in flips or 2x2's.....
as with age and mishandling, the plastic sleaves crack and the rolls are broken up.

Engelhard 1983 multi metal set
<< <i>Here is a set of prospectors from 1983. Bummer about the tomb they rest in. Also, to the best of my knowledge, silver fractionals were a 1 year only deal, and that was 1985.

hey that is pretty cool actually. though, i cannot imagine leaving that
on my desk at work ;-)
I bought a roll of the 1/4 oz. Prospectors in 1985. It came with 41 pieces. Eventually, I sold the roll of 40 and kept the extra coin as a pocket piece, which I still have.
I knew it would happen.

These desk sets are SOOOOO rare...... probably the rarest single item Engelhard made.
I can not prove it, but I believe that less than a dozen are known.

Very nice! Is it possible to liberate those coins, if one wanted to, without damaging them? And out of curiosity, where did you get the dozen known statistic from?
I guess if someone was carefull, the pieces could be removed. I am not going to be the one to try!
I can NOT prove my guess that 12 of these were made....
I seam to remember, at the time, an Engelhard suppliers newsletter that came around
that they were made as presentation awards/gifts for the CEO and PM division officers at Engelhard.
Again...can I prove it?..no. Sure would be nice to talk to a higher up employee/officer that was there!!

I agree, I viewed all of your Vids on Fractional silver. I heard you state you don't really mess with the "generic" companies but I picked up a 4 Gram bar the other day issued by Simmons Issue. Wondering if you have heard of them? The bar claims they have been around since 1873, also have a 10 gram bar from the same company. I haven't been around long but this is the first 4G bar I've seen. here is a pic of the 4G:
More & more it looks like it ...... I do not "collect" every Engelhard bar by metal and size......
I just really like there modern stuff...... and some of the neat items that come along!
Your 2 vidios on Utube are very well done and fun to watch!!
