Carefully open the wax packaged cards, making sure you don't damage the contents in the process.

But no, don't rip it open.

    Manny,

HI! How have you been? For those who do not know me, I am
a fellow (ex) unopened pack collector (I just sold almost my entire collection in the last 2 Mastro auctions ... had some AWESOME packs ... but HUGE medical expenses forced me to sell them ... and YES, I have VERY good medical coverage, THAT'S how large the expense was.)

Manny, like I have told many people I have never ripped open a pack from '75 or older, but I say RIP AWAY and then get that Bradley card graded immediately! LOL

    Stay Healthy

well, unless some of the old timers chime in, it certainly looks to be a ripping experience tomorrow nite. I am about 15 cards short of a PSA-8 set, and I do need the checklist. That would be sweet.

Value will be determined by PSA-8 on-line SMR. If price is a tie, 1st post wins.

the following is the cert of the '74 pack the winner will receive.

This card has been graded and authenticated by Global's team of experts.
It is authentic as long as it stays encapsulated within the Global Card Holder.

    Manufacturer 1974 Topps N/A
    Player WAX PACK
    Sport Baseball
    Cert Number 10161854
    Grade 8

That has to be the best reason I have ever heard to rip a pack. I may spend some alone time tonight now with my unopened stuff.
  • mikelowell25mikelowell25 Posts: 1,252 ✭✭✭
hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the best card in that pack will be the lucius allen thats showing through on the back of the pack (so thats my guess)
if all the other cards are $35 commons, do i win???!!!image
  • I wholeheartedly agree with Griffins. You will regret it 5 minutes after the rip. Eventually have gai slab it once they obtain some more slabs and hold onto it and the others for years to come. They are very rare and extremely desireable and will only appreciate in value. Open a mid '70's pak if you really need to rip something and get it out of your system for only $50 instead of $500!!

  • WTH!!! I have to wait another day? Dude, we are living vicariously through you. You must rip this pack. Your country wants you to. Sorry, just watched Grease 2 with my daughter. That song stuck in my head.

Marc- GAI seems to often run out of holders, so I wouldn't read anything into that other than poor inventory control. Probably the least of their problems at this point. IIRC Manny got this from ML, and they were probably on a deadline and took it as is. I"m quite sure if sent in Mike Baker would gladly holder it for free.
I've sent in packs and had them in once size of holder, sent in more and had the same size pack in a completely different holder. They'll slam in what they've got, and if not put a sticker on top of the card saver.

Manny- given how tough that year is for unopened packs, and how easy it is (relatively) to put together a 99 card set in that grade, is it REALLY worth it? And before you get tempted to go on a rampage, lets talk about that '69 super pack you have!

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • I'm with Anthony on this one.
I know it's a buzz kill, but if it is worth 700.00 or more ..... I'd sell it
    instead of opening it.
  • For those that are trying to talk him out of it, GO AWAY!! He has more that are slabbed.
  • Ok, ask yourself: Will the pleasure you get from opening the pack and the slight possibility of realizing substantial financial gain outweigh the "regret" you may experience if you get nothing? If so, RIP IT.

However, if you're one of those people that might take a different way to work one day to shake things up, get in an accident then lament for a month that "if I'd only kept to my typical routine, then I wouldn't have gotten in this wreck", then I say.......................RIP IT
  • I have tons of wax, granted mostly 80s stuff, that I occassionally get the urge to rip. Apperantly me and the dude thinking of ripping this pack are on a different level financially. However, when I get that urge, I will pull out a few packs and stare at them trying to decide to rip or not. I almost always rip them and occassionally have remorse for like a minute. Then I realize my momma still loves me and I feel better. RIP IT damn it!!

I am of the minority position as well... leave it sealed. You got a bargain on it... get it slabbed and flip it for a nice profit. You can always pick up some of the key cards in the condition you want that you can only hope to pull out of this pack.

I say keep it as is , get it holdered enjoy your good deal. I have ripped many many vintage packs but since the odds are so against you , I usually keep my threshold of pain low , say 400 bucks and I usually only do it when their is demand for the cards that 1 good pull can pay for the whole pack an there are a lot of possiblilites of a pull. in 69 , you need to pull a centered kareem or you are losing money. doesn't seem like a smart move. compare that to say a 66 philly football cello when you can easily pull 8's that will cover the pack and there are a lot of potential 9's that would give you a significant profit. those are the packs to gamble on, not this one.
  • baseballjeffbaseballjeff Posts: 1,082 ✭✭✭
Open it! You'll always have money, how many times in our life do we get the chance to open up such a sweet pack!
  • BrickBrick Posts: 4,999 ✭✭✭✭✭
If this is a hobby for you and financial matters do not come into play go ahead and rip. You will find the best card third one down in the pack is a Larry Siegfried Rookie. If finances do matter listen to Griffins and the other pack experts and have it slabbed. They say you have a better chance of being hit by lightning twice than winning the lottery. Perhaps you have a better chance of being hit by lightning twice and winning the lottery than having a profitable rip. If you do rip, and it seems you are predisposed in this direction, Good Luck to you.
