to rip or not to rip?? Your vote will determine!

Ok...let me start by saying I never open vintage wax or cello packs. Just love looking at them and saving them for my kids, grandkids, or for when I am on my death bed. But the temptatoin is really stong on this '69 basketball wax pack. I picked it up from the last Memory Lane auction. As you can see it is "graded" GAI-8, but the folks at GAI must have been moving again(LOL) and did not have a holder for it. Paid a very decent price of just over $700 for it..which is about $500 or so less than what it should have gone for.

Since I have 4 others that are slabbed, I am very tempted to pop this baby open. It has Lucius Allen on back, and #57 Joe Ellis on top.

Rip it or keep it??

The votes will carry the day--voting will be closed at 7PM on Sunday. If ripping is the vote, I will do so about 8PM on Sunday and will video it.

If it was the only pack you had, I would say to leave it alone.

But since it isn't - let it rip.

Well seeing as you have some other packs already slabbed you should do the right thing and redistribute the cards to me as I only have about 3 basketball cards.

I will then rip it for you.

Leave it alone. Been resealed anyways. kidding.

Agree with others, since you have others, got it cheaper and since your contemplating opening it, you can afford to. Open it. Good Luck.

I have a question about pack grading.

Does the grade that an unopened pack receive have anything to do with the cards inside? For example, does the tightness of the seal of the pack (which could affect the corners of the cards) factor into the unopened pack grade?

    fujfuj Posts: 559 ✭✭✭
Clearly this was the wrong group to ask if you were trying to keep this pack sealed!

With that said, I vote to RIP!

I know that wear on corners can affect the corners inside. I opened a couple GAI 8 packs and some were dinged where the corners showed wear on the wrapper.

...and so you all know, private messages are allowed and encouraged. I have received a number of them thus far and the results on ripping or not ripping are astounding!!

Predictions are also allowed. To sweeten the pot, so to speak, I will offer a prize for the person who correctly predicts what the best card will be.

If the vote is to rip it....To win, you must predict what the best card pulled will be. If there are multiple correct guesses, the tie breaker will be where the card is pulled. So to win, you must tell me what the best card will be and which card it will be starting from the top card--Ellis. Condition does not matter for this contest. If there are multiple correct answers, the 1st posted will win.

    The prize--

a 1974 Topps Baseball Wax Pack--GAI-8. That MUST be ripped on this board...

I'll stick with Alcindor, right under the top card.

Just in case it isn't Lew, how will you determine the most valuable card?
