2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar Program

A lot of talk about the new cents coming out next year, but I haven't heard much talk about this new commem. It's honoring an important historical figure and the obverse design is strong. What say you?

I'm unimpressed with the design, personally.

Though thoughtfull during design to boss Brail lettering on the reverse, my eyes still trick my brain into thinking about dominoes.

looks like it was designed using a computer with the intent of low-relief striking. Unimpressive, as are nearly all of the modern commems and circulating coinage

Why are we honoring a frenchman? Aren't there any great americans left that are worthy of a commemorative coin? Braille was a great man and certainly worthy of being honored on a coin but it should be on a french coin.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

Very drab design! Combine with the crappy economy, I predict abysmal sales--which, of course, will make it very valuable later.

Maybe they could act quickly and swap issues with the DeBakey medal.

    Zero Interest
Collection under construction: VG Barber Quarters & Halves
  • I agree that the overall design is poor. One can't deny the importance of this man's contribution to the blind community, though, be it in France or the US.

I agree with you GritsMan that this looks like a coin that won't sell very well...
  • The irony of eye appeal on a coin dedicated to a hero for the blind is freakish......

I'd definitely like to see Helen Keller on a commem; she was on the State Quarter Program

The Braille code bumps on the reverse are a nice touch... Pun Intended! imageimage

Yup. Helen Keller was on the Alabama state quarter along with some braille. Unusual choice for a state quarter.

Just another southern state trying to be overly PC.
Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!
  • Slave to the set therefore a buyer no matter how poor the design.image
