eBay cutting jobs

dohdoh Posts: 6,457 ✭✭✭
SAN JOSE, Calif. - EBay Inc. said on Monday it will cut about 1,000 employees, reducing its work force by about 10 percent.

The online auction site also said it will get rid of several hundred temporary workers and reduce open positions.

EBay said the reductions would streamline its organization. The company said it expects restructuring charges of about $70 million to $80 million, mostly in the fourth quarter.

EBay also said its third-quarter earnings would be higher than it predicted in July, although revenue will be at the low end of its expectation. It is scheduled to announce third-quarter results on Oct. 15.

On July 16 eBay said it expected third-quarter earnings between 30 cents and 32 cents per share, and revenue between $2.1 billion and $2.15 billion.

EBay also said it will buy online payments business Bill Me Later for $820 million in cash and $125 million in outstanding options. The company also said it will buy Danish classifieds site dba.dk and vehicles site bilbasen.dk for $390 million in cash.

Haha. I feel bad for the people losing their jobs of course, but to eBay I say, haha.

Sure sounds to me like yer oh-so-happy that eBay is biting the dust when they are far from it. Streamlining =/= times are bad for eBay.

I use eBay a lot. I don't want them to bite the dust, but I am glad to see some of their new policies are coming back to bite them. Figures be damned, laying off people is a bad sign. Maybe they'll wake up.

Reducing hubris in the still personnel heavy tech sector seems like a good thing to me.

The guy from eBay was on cnbc this morning. He basically said the job cuts are to help pay for bill me later image
  • I didn't know they even had that many employees. I though they just had computers and a few techs image

Sorry to hear that people are losing their jobs. There's a few more mortgages that won't get paid.
I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff will be coming down for quite a while!

hmm, if ebay would stop enacting dumb policies I and many people would be using it more often!

I do feel sorry for the people losing their jobs though.

DoH, I took my meds this morning.

Why so hard on companies that put money in your pocket. Even making a statement about seeing a company like Ebay or any other company suffer is EVIL!!!

Is there something really wrong with you DOH? You are one negative socialite!!

These are hard times for many. I think Ebay has been a huge part to keep this Coin hobby fresh. Making a statement like you did is Mute.

BTW, keep this crap off of the US Coin forum. This has nothing to do with COINS!!

    JMHO!

YaHa, you have some weird bone to pick with me and I'm not sure why. I don't remember ever doing anything to you, yet every time I post you reply some nonsense. What is your problem with me?
Edit: This has everything to with coins as eBay is a huge sales venue for numismatic materials. When PCGS decides to make an eBay forum, I'll post things like this there, but until then I will continue posting here. Please don't click on my posts if you can't respond intelligently. Thank you.

Gotta say George, with some of your rambling rants, telling someone else what does or doesn't belong here sounds a lot like the pot calling the kettle.....

As management does not usually have the same perspective as their clients they may be viewing other factors as the primary reason for any downturn in their reveunes.

It is highly likely that more than Ebay's various policy changes have resulted in decreased reveunes. Management is no doubt looking at the overall economic conditions of the country as playing an role amoungest other external factors.

Their perspective may be causing them to misweigh factors and either continue or add to what their customers perceive as missteps to their business model.

It's simple. The new policies have nothing to do with the reason eBay is laying people off. eBay has been experiencing turbulent fiinancial waters since long before the policy changes were implemented. In fact, their financials have improved recently.

  • im guessing those 1000 lost jobs are all from the stellar CUSTOMER SERVICE dept.

maybe if they didnt piss off so many buyers and sellers the past year they would be doing better image

Only logical and I think correct reply here. Maybe a few should back up and really review the situation.

With the lost Ebay jobs, this forum's Ebay police may have to pick up the slack, by looking more vigoriously for auctions with minor violations.

I'm a proud member of the eBay police. I love when jerks don't follow the rules and I get to complain about it. It brings me joy.

Just like TavernTreasures gets joy by complaining about people who complain about eBay. "Hey, Kettle, you sure are black today."

I am surprised at the number of employees that ebay has total. I am feel bad when anyone loses there job reguardless of wether i like that company or not.

I will never understand why grown people like to tattle and report on others for free on ebay. I try to follow ebay rules myself. I do not care what another seller does or does not do. Must be a inferiority complex or something.

I am sorry for the 1000 people that were doing a job for ebay yesterday and no longer have one today.

No. I don't like paying increased fees because so many others skirt the rules. eBay has to make up for that and by increasing fees and honest people like myself (and most others) get screwed because people try to circumvent the fees. I'd love to not pay for anything, I'd love to take a short cut, but I don't on eBay and that's why I report jacka$$es who do. If you don't like readings from the eBay police, then don't click the link. It's not rocket science.

EBay has developed a marketing strategy that has directed the company toward failure. If I were an eBay employee, I’d be working on my resume even if I escaped this 10% cut in their workforce. EBay is going to be the next Enron in the on-line marketing business. The people who deserve the ax at eBay are the senior management people who are running the company into the ground.

A lot of the ratting that takes place (as far as EBAY auctions is concerned) has nothing to do with a seller circumventing fees as mentioned by another poster.

Many rats will try to get a seller for: not showing a picture of the slab; mentioning the word PCI or other 3rd tier slabbing company; keyword spamming; charge of too much postage/handling; charging extra for taking Paypal; etc, etc, etc. There are probably more examples that I cannot remember.

There are rats in all walks of life. I remember them from my school days. There are some on the job that you gotta watch out for. They are here too.

I would like to see the math where ebay fees would have to increase, without the free tattle tales. You say SO MANY skirt the rules. I bet the actual percentage is rather low. Last I checked the fees keep going up. So either we need more tattle tales or????

As I posted, I try to follow all the rules at Ebay. Sellers that skirt the rules IMO are more likely not to achieve the results they are aiming for and end up hurting themselves in the long run.

If you want to work for free and save money, report Food Stamp violators, Medicare scammers etc. No part of this country is 100 percent free of scammers, thieves and rule violators. I wish the world was rid of crooks and the like.

It is still bottom feeders imo that do the tattling; their lack of success in life causes them to look to bring others down to make up for their short comings.

the job loss was probably felt most overseas.......how many onshore employees did they have...?......

the mortgage on the mud and grass hut in India is about to go into default.............
  • Here is the latest on Ebay stock. They peaked at about $65 in July of 05 with the latest at $17.89. Their stock has been going down all year. The new policies did not help. I think they should revisit their policies since their stock continues to go down...
