2008 unc sets

I just picked up 2 2008 unc sets.

I had to look at 5 sets to find cents with no spots.

WTF is going on with unc sets this year??

  • I've had the same experience and have wondered the same thing. Opened 3 Mint Sets to put coins into folders and every one had at least one coin with problems. Of the 6 Proof Sets I ordered, I returned 4 of them - they all had 2-4 coins with discolorations or nicks. Of 3 Silver Proof Sets, one went back for the same problems. I cringe and hold my breath every time I open a set. I have sets I haven't opened the brown boxes of and don't know if I should, or if ignorance is bliss.

Shame on the Mint - these are coins we pay deep premiums on and they should give us premium coins. Proof coins just shouldn't come in PR66 condition. Don't these people take pride in their work anymore?

And why is it, in general, that Philly's coins are AWFUL in comparison to Denver's? It's been that way for years and I've never understood why.

Okay, thanks for the chance to vent, I'm done now.

Have bought and sold on BST, many references available when asked.

    Ditto Marlene!

The quality of the proof coins being produced lately makes you wonder why they even try?

Nicks, scrapes and gouges Oh My!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

I guess I have been very fortunate... I have only returned one coin to the mint (an ASE with a very prominent scratch)... all others (sets and individual coins) have been pristine. I do not doubt what many say here, just that I have not seen this problem. I always open my sets/coins when I receive them and carefully examine them. Cheers, RickO

It was the uncirc sets, but none found at my house!

  • I just opened my box of 10 silver proof set, ALL the quarters on the obverse have what looks like tiny dust particles in the fields. I'm not sending them back, probably would get 10 more w/the same specks on them. Standards hit bottom this year. Oh well, most of the gov't agencies aren't doing their jobs too well these days, why should the mint be any different?
