1 oz gold coin question

i'm looking to buy some 1 oz gold coins for the protection having the physical coin could provide during this financial meltdown if the banks all fail. i was wondering if the mint is the best place to be buying these coins from or if there is a better place somewhere to buy them as i noticed the usmint website was charging a healthy premium over the melt price of the coins. i really don't care all that much about condition, as i'm not a real collector- just want the gold coins until the waters clear.

i'm a member of these forums for non-sports card collecting, but thought this would be the most knowledgeable community to ask my question to. thanks a bunch

  • If you don't care about the condition and just want physical gold, try www.apmex.com. I've bought from them many times before - great service, and very competitive pricing.

Just buy some 10oz bars. I bought some silver bars from Monex recently, they have decent service/prices over spot.

Like others have said, if you just want gold for bullion then some place like APMEX is your best shot. The mint adds a collector premium well above melt where a bullion dealer only adds a small fixed premium above melt. i.e. if you catch it on a down day you can save $50+

Last I checked they were sold out. you might check with wondercoin on the BST. I think you'll pay over melt right now. --Jerry
  • Depending on the quantity you are looking for. Place a BST listing that you WTB and state your quantity.

There has been Gold close to spot in the last few days.... teletradedirect.com has gold close to spot
    for Maples and Kugerands...
  • I have found the Northwest Territorial Mint (for small quantities) and the Tulving Company (20 or more ounces) to be reliable and dependable sources for gold and other PMs.
  • just picked up a 100 oz silver rounds - dealer told me his phone has been off the hook with people wanting to buy PM's - probably happening all over the country - sign of the times - i.e. US Mint suspending sales of 1 oz Golden Buffs - IMHO, having some physical gold and silver is a good move in these difficult financial times - just the idea of having some around calms the nerves, that is unless, the US Government doesnt confiscate it like they did back in the 30's.

good luck finding physical gold and silver - will only get worse as things continue to go downhill!!

I would go with Tulving LINK; they don't charge a shipping fee for 20 or more ounces.

Where do you see the mint suspending sales of 1 Oz Buffs? Seems that they are all still available on the website.
  • i think i'm going with the 10 oz bars from apmex that seems to suit my purpose the best i think... i may get some of the shot as well though just because having a little box of that would be like becoming a pirate.
