Two ounce Libertads and Airtites

Most of the information I see shows a 2 ounce Mexican Silver Libertad as having a 48mm diameter.

I recently got an "X6" size direct fit airtite which appears to be a 47.75mm diameter. The coin does not fit.

I know I can get one of the huge oversized "X65" capsules with a black ring. I do not like that.
I'd much rather have a direct fit capsule on this coin. Anyone know of where to turn for this?

Yes, I know i'm verging on a coin question in the PM forum. But I thought i'd give it a try. I've been getting into larger (>1oz) silver pieces lately.

  • Adam, I think the black ring is actually quite attractive....especially with silver. I have put all my non slabbed silver pandas in these and am very pleased with the aesthetic appearance.

What I do not like about the X65 capsule with the black ring...

It's not quite as much about the black ring...

The capsule itself is easily twice as deep as necessary to hold the coin. The 2 ounce Libertad is not nearly as thick as some of the coins that will fit in the X65. It looks odd.

I could drill a hole in the exact center of one of my libertads. Then I affix it to a dremel tool. Then I use my "Libertad" based reamer to ream out some X6 capsules...all I need is to shave off half of a millimeter of plastic.

The question is, it it safe putting 2 ounces of silver on the end of a dremel tool? I'll have to get the balance just right.

I prefer black ring "I" holders for all of my 1 ounce pieces. I have 5 ounce pieces in a direct fit airtite.

I am surprised there are no capsules available that are a close fit for a 2 ounce Libertad. Ouch, my OCD.

[edit] I post at the exact time as a REAL ANSWER! THANKS!!! I guess now I find out if we are talking 48mm or 48.something mm.

I just got 48mm capsules from Lighthouse.

The 2 ounce Libertad is a friction fit in these. They don't want to go in easily, but will slide in if pressed.

Fortunately, the 2 ounce Libertad is heavy enough that by banging the darn thing on the table, I can get it back out. I do have to be a little bit careful so as not to launch a chunk of silver across the room.

A 49mm capsule might be better, but it would rattle a little bit. I will make do with 48mm.
