Eye Candy - 1938 Proof Cameo Walker -Many pictures

robecrobec Posts: 6,608 ✭✭✭✭✭
After months of begging, SkyMan finally relented and sent me his Proof Cameo Walker for me to image. These images are not something that Sy neither wanted or needed as he already has some stellar images taken by Bruce Lee ( Bruceswar). I wanted these for my own personal satisfaction since this is undoubtedly the most beautiful Walker I have ever seen. Thank you Sy for the opportunity.

That one is a beast to photograph, I tried to do it while holding a conversation with him. Did not work out too well, I really needed time to focus on it. I forgot to do a lot of settings in the camera and I forgot to get a reference for white balance. I would definitely like another chance with this one. image

Great coin! Since I enjoy and often deal with these early proofs, I appreciate a Walker with this level of contrast. It is important to see that the frost is present on the sun, legends, and a significant portion of the devices on both sides (not only on the main devices of Liberty on the obverse and the eagle on the reverse.)

In my experience, most times when I locate a proof Walker with some cameo contrast (but not designated as a cameo,) the obverse sun lacks contrast as does the rock on which the eagle stands on the reverse. Next, the contrast on the legends and other smaller details is likely to be very light or nearly absent on these coins.

The frost on the sun was one of the main points in Sy's description also. You both have very good eyes and knowledge on this point.

Thanks, Bob. Cameo proofs from 1936-42 are some of my favorite "modern" coins, so I have become rather familiar with their characteristics.

There are many coins that are more expensive, but not many which are as rarely seen as cameo Walkers. Beautiful coin.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

EXCELLENT pics, Bob!!! Thank you very much for imaging it. I like your pics too, Ben!

    << <i>did this actually grade cameo? >>

It is graded NGC PR66Cameo. I have been advised by Rick Tomaska to send it back for regrading as he believes it could UCAM and could go 67. I personally doubt that it would UCAM, but it might Cameo*. As (the good Lord willing) I plan to hold on to this coin a LONG time I have no plans to send it back for regrading anytime soon.

Thank you everybody for all the nice comments.

I can literally hold the coin at arms length and still see my face in the mirrors.

EDITED TO ADD: Sorry Lloyd, I rarely go to Long Beach, and I won't be going this time. I normally go to Santa Clara though if you ever go to it. A variety of forum members have seen this coin there. I MAY go to FUN this January, but that's quite iffy.

Was searching for another thread...and came upon this one from before I was on the board. I've seen one or two photos of this coin, but not the full spread as offered here, and thought I'd give it a bump.

Once again, incredible coin Skyman. image

That last obverse picture is my favorite. I must agree that it is the nicest Walker I have seen photographs of. Some of those reverse photos look like the eagle is coming right off of the coin. I have a very nice proof '38 Walker, but this one makes mine look like scrap metal.
