Probably not strong enough to break anything or do structural damage to your house. But enough to get your attention and then some. I bet home depot will have a run on spackle for all of the cracks that just opened up in the wallboard.

However, there will be plenty of photos of damage on the media tonight.

Some liquor store (perhaps many) with totally stocked cabinets and absolutely no way to keep that stuff from sliding around will see much of their stock smashed on the floor. Other liquor stores install a cable or other barrier to prevent stock from sliding off the front of the shelf.

I felt it - and to keep this coin related, I was worried that the glass book case where I keep all my numismatic books was about to come crashing down.

I live in the Hollywood Hills.

All clear here in South Ga...image Although, looking at this map, that's just CRAZY the number of quakes in the last week!!!!!!! 403????? Between those, the fires, and all the crazy people (excluding all the CU people), why would people be flocking to CA by the droves to live and paying way to much for their SOL?

The only quake I ever experienced was in the N. Ga mountians when my wife and I were on our honeymoon. No, it wasn't what you're thinking, it was a real earthquake, and my wife slept through it. I thought the cabin we were in was going to slide down the side of the mountian. I think it was in the 2 range........way too much and way too close for me.

  • I felt it here at my office in San Diego, but it was a pretty light one and nobody really mentioned it. Earthquakes are pretty common here and I rarely give them a second thought.

I felt it up here in Ventura County. All the employees inexplicably left for lunch early image

Strange thing was I felt the foreshock (surface wave) a good 10-15 seconds before the main event. I knew that by the time the main event hit that it had to be several miles away.

Felt just like the Landers quake a few years back - 80+ miles away, but at 7.1 was strong enough to slosh 2 feet of water out of the pool.

When I was living in CA, I only felt one earthquake at Edwards AFB, sometime in early 2005 I think. I thought it was the fat guy walking on our floor because it felt just like that. We got used to sonic booms and whatnot so I didn't even know until about half an hour later when someone asked if I felt it. It totally unimpressive, but that was a good thing.

The only reason the phones stop working is that everyone seems to be required to make a phone call after an earthquake. It's not damage to the network as much as human nature overloading the system.

You will be feeling small aftershocks for some time.

The last relatively large earthquake in the Bay Area was about 5.6, late last year. It was not far from downtown San Jose. I work in a set of buildings, about 18 stories tall. The buildings are connected by sky walkways on the 14th floor. After the earthquake, it was apparent that the buildings tilted a little bit, as a sky walkway is now one inch longer than it was before.

Same here I felt the foreshock a few seconds before the real shaking. Cell phone just started working again.

Are you 120 years old or are you talking about Loma Prieta in 1989?

Loma Prieta wasn't the "big one" that everyone fears. It was darn scary and lasted a long time. I was 30 miles away. Yet the power didn't even go out, the chimney didn't fall down, nothing broke. Lots of cracks!

A few houses in Santa Cruz were shaken off of their foundation. About half of the brick chimneys fell down. Only recently did they finally rebuild the last demolished lots in downtown.

    But no coins were harmed.

(I would hope that someone from PCGS would chime in. Surely they felt it strongly! I bet that grading coins just after an earthquake sucks!!!)

It was a pretty big jolt for me at my home, about 20 miles from the epicenter. No damage or injuries reported.

The neighbor's three year old had one of his toy block buildings fall down and he had to rebuild it. Not too serious at all.

It came in two surges. The first one was shorter and milder, followed by some low rumbling, then the main event hit and we shook pretty good. I live up on top of a hill in northern San Diego county.

    Today's Earthquake Fact:

Inge Lehman was a famous Danish seismologist and the only woman to win the Medal of the Seismological Society of America. Her most famous achievement was the discovery of the inner and outer cores of the Earth through the reflection of seismic waves off those surfaces. She died in 1993 at the age of 105.

I echo Sumnom... nothing here in Seattle... but 5.4 is just a small one anyway..... will get your attention, but not more than that. Especially when it is that deep. Now a shallow one... at 6.5 - hold on to your shoes... they will walk away without you.... Cheers, RickO
