Probably not strong enough to break anything or do structural damage to your house. But enough to get your attention and then some. I bet home depot will have a run on spackle for all of the cracks that just opened up in the wallboard.
However, there will be plenty of photos of damage on the media tonight.
Some liquor store (perhaps many) with totally stocked cabinets and absolutely no way to keep that stuff from sliding around will see much of their stock smashed on the floor. Other liquor stores install a cable or other barrier to prevent stock from sliding off the front of the shelf.

All clear here in South Ga...
The only quake I ever experienced was in the N. Ga mountians when my wife and I were on our honeymoon. No, it wasn't what you're thinking, it was a real earthquake, and my wife slept through it. I thought the cabin we were in was going to slide down the side of the mountian. I think it was in the 2 range........way too much and way too close for me.

Strange thing was I felt the foreshock (surface wave) a good 10-15 seconds before the main event. I knew that by the time the main event hit that it had to be several miles away.
Felt just like the Landers quake a few years back - 80+ miles away, but at 7.1 was strong enough to slosh 2 feet of water out of the pool.
Check out my current listings: https://ebay.com/sch/khunt/m.html?_ipg=200&_sop=12&_rdc=1
did it last any amount of time???
5.8 is definately one you feel...being an ol san fernando valley resident many years ago...and was there thru the sylmar/san fernando big one
You will be feeling small aftershocks for some time.
The last relatively large earthquake in the Bay Area was about 5.6, late last year. It was not far from downtown San Jose. I work in a set of buildings, about 18 stories tall. The buildings are connected by sky walkways on the 14th floor. After the earthquake, it was apparent that the buildings tilted a little bit, as a sky walkway is now one inch longer than it was before.
<< <i>I felt it up here in Ventura County. All the employees inexplicably left for lunch early

Same here I felt the foreshock a few seconds before the real shaking. Cell phone just started working again.

Are you 120 years old or are you talking about Loma Prieta in 1989?
Loma Prieta wasn't the "big one" that everyone fears. It was darn scary and lasted a long time. I was 30 miles away. Yet the power didn't even go out, the chimney didn't fall down, nothing broke. Lots of cracks!
A few houses in Santa Cruz were shaken off of their foundation. About half of the brick chimneys fell down. Only recently did they finally rebuild the last demolished lots in downtown.
But no coins were harmed.
(I would hope that someone from PCGS would chime in. Surely they felt it strongly! I bet that grading coins just after an earthquake sucks!!!)
<< <i>The only reason the phones stop working is that everyone seems to be required to make a phone call after an earthquake. It's not damage to the network as much as human nature overloading the system.

i have my office in Willow Glen, i always am a wee bit tense driving into and through the East Bay...small world
The neighbor's three year old had one of his toy block buildings fall down and he had to rebuild it. Not too serious at all.

I like earth quakes- wakes everyone up real fast..
<< <i>my 4 tower cranes were a floppin - we just emptied 4 buildings of workers (575) in under 5 minutes, and we are still placing concrete on our hotel and condo complex. no cell phones, the home wild life are scared as all get out, and I being what I do best in situations like this- took control of the main event- and all is well.

I was worried about the construction jobs that I had going.... concerned for the framers!
Everyone seams to be OK. I guess all the earthquake codes are working
