opinion of grade needed for 1892 Barber Half....

New purchase today and I wanted to know what you thought of the grade. The picture was taken under fluorescent light with the result that the coin looks 'flat' and unattractive. It actually is quite lusterous, slightly frosty and has cartwheel luster.

I'm wondering if the few hairlines on the cheek area and just in front of the chin would keep this coin from grading at PCGS. No hairlines whatsoever are present on the rest of the coin's area but in these two spots only.

Tough pictures, and certainly can not tell if the hairlines you speak of are cleaning or just friction, but I think it would grade without a problem.

Looks pretty close to Unc, but the cheek is probably wear, and there are a few other telltale signs ... so AU58

I'm pretty sure the coin would grade at PCGS but I've been fooled before.

AU 58 details - looks like there are a few grease stains on the obverse.

I see no dings - just circulation marks - and well within the realm of AU 58.

Not too sure if it'll holder because of the stain on the left of Liberty's cap.

I'd like to see pics under non fluorescent light, but for now AU55-58 with no rim ding issues.

Hair lines won't keep a coin from grading unless they are all in the same direction indicating a cleaning.

Great looking coin for a collector. I would say anywhere between AU58 and MS62. I would probably go with MS61.

Coin has original cartwheel luster, which is almost gone at AU55. That dark spot above the ribbon on the obverse is about the best indicator that you have an original (could be dipped) AU58 or MS coin. I would say that the coin could easily grade as MS62. I also think that PCGS would grade it no problem. It might have light hairlines, but stronger hairlines would destroy that cartwheel look. I know because I just bought an AU58 online that has strong hairlines and the cartwheel effect is shot to hell.

It may grade AU58, but it is a really nice AU58 for the luster, while the nicks and ticks on the obverse aren't ideal, but not too bad either.

And as a follow on how would it affect the grade if it is a carbon spot?

You should see some of the POS of this series that are in MS 65 holders; I'd be shocked if your coin doesn't grade. Don't know about the dime though, it looked played with to me.
