Ask him to throw in some of the Nintendo DS games he has recently won. Would be nice of him to sweeten the deal.

Can we take bets on what will actually be received if anything?
  • How would a penny that resided under floor boards be so Red anyway? Doesn't the coin react with the air and turn the copper brown eventually? And wouldn't there be bad residue, gunk, etc. if it were under floor boards?

Eric, if you are willing to pay $900 for a coin like that. . .we can definitely do some business together, buddy! I have tons of coins to offer to sell you!
A lie told often enough becomes the truth. ~Vladimir Lenin

  • My money is on a very nice RB 1909 VDB. Probably MS63-64. The seller will feign ignorance or disappear and PP or CC will have to come through will a refund.

Then again maybe it'll be a S-VDB in MS66RD that can be flipped for $15K after slabbing!

    Who knows.............

Here is my theory. The coin may be the real thing. The seller obviously knows very little about coins.
Grandpa was showing off his prized coin and mentioned the value, leaves coin out on desk, and
forgets to put it away. Grandchild sees opportunity to sell and buy video games, but does not want to
post full pictures of possibly slabbed coin because it could be traced. When coin is sold, it would be removed
from slab and sent to buyer.

I think the seller is full of it, he obviously knows its value, if you knew nothing about coins as he claims, and you were selling a coin you found, how would you know to say its a 1909 s VDB

  • << <i>"So any suggestions on how I should make payment that would give me the best chance of recovering my $$ if this goes south would be appreciated!"

PayPal funded with a credit card.

Be prepared for the seller to claim a "problem" with PayPal.
If that happens, simply tell them to fix the "problem" and
that you will ONLY pay via PayPal.

The seller may have a 21-day PP hold on the funds that will
not be released until the item is satisfactorily delivered.

This is a 100% SCAM. Gladly, a sophisticated person is the
intended victim; the scam will fail. >>

As he said. But this is such an obvious scam, I can't believe anyone bid unless it was to save others.

    UPDATE

I have been in touch with the seller about the way the item was to be shipped, I suggested Priority Mail Insured and that I would pay for the difference and to send an updated invoice which they did this afternoon.

Well a couple minutes ago I get this ....

    Dear beers3740,

    Dear Sir,

I have received a second chance offer on the 1909S VDB penny you previously won, Item # 180269925828.

Can you confirm that you did not go thru with the purchase and why?

I am considering the offer, but am concerned at this point.

    Thank You

    ..........................................................................................................................................................................

I left out his ID but it was the second bidder in line.....

I have not paypaled this yet either......opinions?

That means that the seller has more than one of these coins, and thus they aren't legit. I'd bail at this point. I commend you on your willingness to take a chance but I'd say this seals the deal. Confront the seller and see what they say. They can't leave you a neg. --Jerry

    Opinions?

    1) You have an opportunity to prevent a second person from being scammed. By all means, do so.
    2) Are you seriously still considering paying this person? There may be aspects to this scam yet to unfold. You may think you are protected, but what if that angle has been covered by this fraudster?

Second chance offers can mean the buyer didn't follow through or the seller has more than one. My thought is he doesn't really have an S-VDB he found in the floor. He has junk or isn't planning to send anything. In that case he has an infinite supply. I just reviewed feedback and all previous feedback was kids electronic games...then nothing for a month, then this. It could be hijacked or it could be a teenager trying a scam. --Jerry

Edit: what does it add to the equation? it pushes me over the hump to conclude definite scam.

Yes it's a small town. Like many of these towns, it's filled with ignorant scumbags looking to rip people off if they can get away with it.

They probably have some fakes and want to see what they can get for them. The Lincoln looks like one of the fakes that has been discussed here on this board, e.g., with the VDB not centered between the wheat stalks.

Most would. But there are certainly those that look to rip off outsiders. I should have used something other than "filled with". Perhaps sprinkled with scumbags would have been better.

This sure has been an interesting read. There is no doubt in my mind this is a scam due to the odd situation with the camera batteries and poor picture quality. But what sealed the bs story for me was the 2nd chance offer.

Did you hear that the Governor's mansion in West Virginia burned down?
Almost took out the whole trailer park.

What's the difference between Virginia and West Virginia?
In Virginia, Moosehead is a beer. In West Virginia it's a misdemeanor.

Did you hear that they have raised the minimum drinking age in West Virginia to 32?
It seems they want to keep alcohol out of the high schools!

What's the difference between a Maryland zoo and a West Virginia zoo?
On the cage in a Maryland zoo, it will have the name of the animal and the scientific name in Latin. A West Virginia zoo will have the name of the animal and a recipe.

    Sorry, I just couldn't resist.

The Population was 5,303 in 2000. Per capita income was $13,813. I looked them (Shears) up on Zaba, about 5 listed at the same address. Still, what do you think about them using a pic where the coin appears to be in a slab (with white insert, such as NGC)? None of us buy the "found it in the floor boards" thing. Then, you find out about the second chance offer? Something's up (understatement). They've made 20 purchases for a total of only $243.43 for mostly kids games. They are either kids, adults buying for kids, or "adults" living like children. The whole thing is a sordid mess. The one extremely small reverse pic ("camera is needing batteries" - "camera is running down the battery"). Sounds like they need more play money. It's possible that with the second chance offer, they were thinking someone else would just hurry up and send them the money (for a coin they are never going to get).

This is obviously a scam and this seller can send out as many "Second Chance" offers as he likes....NO ONE who takes the seller up on the offer is going to receive a 1909-S VDB. That being said, I don't know why the seller would feel compelled to notify the original buyer, when he could just send out the "Second Chance" offers and start reeling in the suckers.

Here is another theory. You send him the money via PayPal, he ships it insured for $1,000. He sends you an empty box and he files a claim with the PO. He gets $1,000 from the Post Office and gives your money back to you. He walks away with $1,000 bucks. You can't prove he didn't send you a bright shiney 1909 S VDB penny and can't file a chargeback on your CC through PayPal because he gave you your money back.

I could be totally wrong but this guy might be fooling a lot of people... I would open the box in front of a clerk at the Post Office if he does send something so they can verify the contents. Even better, a police officer.

If the penny was so found in the floor it could not retain that much luster so on the note someone is getting F-ed. All of that drinking going on in West virgina and family sex there is no way a coin can retain a shiny luster. Oh don't forget those varmits inside the floor boards.
