That is one gorgeous coin, and if I had unlimited funds I would probably buy it (notice how I said "unlimited"!!!).
That is definitely a knockout.
I respectfully disagree with gecko109, even though his advice is sound. (Actually, I agree with what he said, but have different feelings on the issue).
I guess that's because the novelty on such a piece is unlikely to wear off, if you're anything like me and appreciate coins with some history to 'em. I would rather have something like that in MS65 than a Morgan dollar in MS68. (Well, I would take the MS68 Morgan dollar, sell it, and buy myself a bunch of cool old stuff like that.)
Some are susceptible to the power of The Dark Side. And powerful it is.
I succumbed to it at least a quarter century ago, and I'm a Darksider in the deepest depths of my soul.
PS- I can see why you're tempted, but we ARE talkin' about a healthy four-figure pricetag. You can get stuff just as old with just as much "bling" factor (200 year old proofs, even!) for less than $1G.

If you want to be talked down off the ledge, I'll do my best: It's white as a ghost.
200 years old, rare, bigger than a silver dollar, NGC PR64 UCAM, and gilt copper, meaning it looked like a big ol' honkin' gold proof coin.
Cost me $900-ish, which is the most I've ever spent on a single coin, and I do rather regret selling it, even though it wasn't really a part of any of my sets. Coins like this stand alone.
(This small scan, which is all I have left of it, does not remotely do it justice.)
See? Less than a thousand bucks. You probably couldn't buy a gilt proof penny like that for three figures from a major dealer these days, but a halfpenny, maybe.
The Darkside offers lots of possibilities like this. I once bought some really cool (large, 5-franc) 1840s French patterns in ANACS PR63 for about $200 each. Loaded with eye appeal, and pretty scarce. Just try buying big US patterns in the low three figures!
Besides, these curculated in the US along side other US coins until 1857.

<< <i>There are extensive opportunities in darkside coins... and far more art.... just the art alone should make many numismatists go darkside...Cheers, RickO >>
that is what initially did it for me; there are far more artistic and beautifully designed darkside coins, than US coins.
Just wondering about the price, is this reasonable or just a big number they stick out there. I have no idea on a coin graded this high. Is there a reference such as our Redbook for items like this?

Yes....I would not own that coin if it was given to me...it would be sold to purchase something with some skin left on it
<< <i>Unless this type of coin is your "bag", dont buy the piece. Eventually the novelty will wear off. I experienced this 1st hand with an 1863 German coin that was in an NGC 67 holder. I thought "wow, a coin that old in that great of a condition!". I bought the coin for around $120....then when the novelty wore off and I realized I didnt have any real interest in German coins, I sold the coin at a small loss a few months later. Are you down off the ledge yet? >>

That's a nice coin and worth the bid.
Here's a nice Swiss shooting thaler.
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.

I absolutely love the toning!

I was sort of thinking the same thing, but didn't want to say it.
