OMG! I just dropped a $500 coin onto my hardwood floor!!!

I just bought a beautiful coin for $500 a couple hours ago, and when I went to pick it up in its capsule, I grabbed only the top half. Of course, the bottom half fell out, along with the coin and made a sickening thud along with that "spinning coin sound effect" when it hit my hardwood floor. I was immediately numb all over and sickened. I didnt even look down, I just took a deep breath and called myself a very, VERY derogatory name. When I went down to pick it up, I inspected all the way around the rim first, no damage at all. Then I inspected the face of each side, she looks just fine. Damn that was a bonehead manuever!

Was it a .999 fine gold panda. I would be amazed if a half ounce of pure gold took an impact from a few feet and you see no evidence!

It's possible it hit so broadly that you cannot see anything.

I purchased some slabbed bullion from Becoka last week. When I got it home, as I was photographing it, I did not notice the large grain of sand that was on top of the slab. I put an 'airtite' on top of the PCGS slab. Grain of sharp sand in between. BRUTAL scratch in the slab. That was a very stupid move on my part.

No Adam, its not a half ounce gold panda. That surely would have left a mark!!! Its a rare silver proof, and its simply GORGEOUS!!!! Pics coming momentarily.

Lots of clean fields going on there.

I see how you are happy there are no marks.

    But...

    $500!?!? image

It's an ounce of silver!!! What, does it have the wrong reverse or something?!? Pricey!

Enlighten us as to the rarity, please.

[edit] I guess with some 'common' ASE proofs pushing half of this price, it makes sense.

Try dropping a raw XF Drapped Bust Dollar, that you don't own, onto the concrete floor of a coin show bourse. Yeah, trust me...that'll make your butthole pucker real quick.

A few years ago, I dropped an ICG MS-63 Saint into the garbage can while liberating it from its holder. I submitted the coin to PCGS, and it came back MS-64.

Rather than "cross it or toss it"... an old slogan of a person who no longer posts here...

You did "toss it, then cross it". And it worked well!

According to Krause (which is not very reliable anyway) this coin had a mintage of 20,000 pieces. There are exactly 3 of these on ebay as we speak. A NGC 67 with a BIN of $429....and a NGC 69 with a BIN of $1250, and a PCGS 69 with a BIN of $1650. As far as the 20,000 number, I would seriously challange that. Just the infrequency of specimens available on ebay makes this coin seem to be 2-3 times as rare as that. Couple that with the fact that the coin (even tho its modern) seems to be a conditional rarity in 69 makes this piece highly desirable. I cannot fathom that this coin would grade anything but a 69 DCAM, its flawless. I will submit it and let you know the results when I get them.

Maybe you should drop it into the can a couple more times, maybe bump it up another point or two.

  • IMO coins are actually more durable than most people think.

  • << <i>IMO coins are actually more durable than most people think. >>

    Very true.

These coins were meant to be circulated for many years, and were made accordingly.

It's not like most coins weren't dropped at one point or another throughout their lifetime.

(Although coins that aren't meant to circulate, such as Pandas, are an exception)

image What is it about holding a rare coin that causes that to happen so often? A coin club member had a rare variety large cent he had discovered that was to be featured in CW a few years ago. He proudly handed it to another member, who immediately dropped it! I had to laugh looking at the horrified look on both their faces, but I was glad I wasn't either guy!

I once dropped a raw 1818 Quarter in BU once on a hardwood floor. Luckily it was ok.
