I'm a big target/rim toned fan and that's quite pretty though not spectacular. I'm thinking 63 on the grade.

How's the luster? Was it cleaned long ago and then retoned or does it have cartwheel luster to it?
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

  • I don't care for the "dead white" field look, but the color that does show through around the devices is really nice. Looks NT. I'd give it a 6 out of 10.

I have a couple similar toners. I really like the "brushed" look to the tone on the obverse. (I suppose it's really from fingerprints) I would say 63 also from the photos. The cheeks are really clean however and that's a big plus in my book.

Hard to tell -- at that angle, there may be hits on the cheek that cannot be seen. Also, I presume the luster is better than they way it appears in the image.

Toned coins are harder to grade and it's always hard to grade from an image. I'm betting this coin is real nice in the hand, but from the images, I'd say it looks like an AU58 but it will bring MS63 money at least, probably more.

    MS62.... dipped = MS64.... Cheers, RickO
  • Strong strike and nice example.

It looks like there is luster but it was lost a bit in the photo... I'd say 63 if the luster is close to the photo example but MS64 if the coin has more luster than shown.

Either way... congrats on adding a super sweet CC Morgan to your collection!

Since I'm one of the few who said AU58 for this coin, I thought I might give my reasoning....while realizing I could be wrong at the same time! It looks to me that there is a slight brush of wear or as they used to call it, cabinet friction on the cotton leaves and boils and the hair above the ear and eye and also on the top of the cap. On the reverse, I see it on the eagles breast and on the feet. Now, it might also just be a break in the toning, but I also have a concern for a lack lof luster that I seem to see also.

As I said in an earlier post, I think the coin is reasonably attractive and it will bring MS63 money at least.
    Best wishes,
    Pete

PS to my last post: I meant to say that Ms. Liberty's cheek also gives the appearance of rub rather than contact marks and the same is true with the Eagles wings.

difficult to tell from the reflected light of the photo.

    I think it's an easy ms64.

in hand probably an extremely nice looking coin.

the lack of luster is hopefully due to technique... my first impression was a nicely struck, but AU coin. Closer look, I think probably 63, with a nice strike - but most S mints have that. The toning is attractive, but not over-the-top...the fingerprints kill it for me...just my personal preference for uncircs. To each his own! If you like it, and paid a fair price, pop it in the album and enjoy!
