It's Saturday June 28th 1986

It's Saturday afternoon on June 28th 1986. You and your dad go to the local baseball card show. While your there, your dad says that he will buy you any one card you want, but it can't be any older then 1980. What's the one card that you would have picked?

    Clemens 85 Topps
  • Cool thread idea. For me in 1986, it would have been a 1984 Donruss Mattingly or 1980 Topps Rickey rookie.

I would have only been 2 years and 11 months old. I was starting to care about baseball at that age, but I didn't really know much about sports stars and cards obviously. If I'd have to guess, I'd have wanted a Puckett RC of some sort, '85 Topps I'm sure.

In 1986 I would have been there with my collection manager, not my dad, and I would have asked him to buy me a 1959 Ted Williams pack.

    Sorry, I had to.

Since I already had the Ted Williams pack, and it isn't from the 1980's anyway, I would have picked something else. It would have been the 84 Donruss Mattingly for me, hands down!!

1986 was my first year collecting and I wanted to get a Reggie Jackson card in an Angels uniform. I bought what seems like tons of 1986 Topps packs and NEVER got one! I bought one for 50 cents at a card collecting club set up at my grade school(If memory serves me it was his 1983 All-Star card) . I also bought all those packs hoping to pull a Wally Joyner card. I had no idea he wasn't in the set. In 1985-1986 my family lived in Carson, Cali. and the first team I loved was the 1986 Angels. Also one of the lunch ladies at my school worked nights at Toys R Us. When she got word that Garbage Pail Kids were coming in she would let the kids know. We would give her our quarters (I believe they were a quarter a pack) and the next day we had GPK gold!! It was a great day when they came in because on the playground GPK cards would sell for a quarter per card, not that I would ever part with mine but I always felt like I was getting ripped off. Sorry to get off topic, to answer your question I probably would have bought some Don Sutton card I hadn't seen before. Thanks for bringing back the memories! Thats what this hobby is about for me. Ahhhh to be 10 again, anyone up for a game of kickball and then off to the corner store for a pack of cards and a bigstick popsicle??

    << <i> It's Saturday afternoon on June 28th 1986. >>

For me I was getting close to 18 and was just getting into race cars and kinda wasn't into baseball as much at the time, so I know I wouldn't have gone to buy any cards back then. If I were at the time, the others are right on...
I remember how hot the Doc cards were, Rickey, and Mattingly cards. I don't recall how hot the McGwire cards were and I would have thought Ripken was hot. I also think I would have tried to collect the cards of the 70's stars I grew up watching even though they weren't the hot cards back then.

    I'm feeling too old..lol
  • I would have and did ask my dad to buy me any Strawberry rookies he could get a hold of. Strawberry still has a special place in my pc.

84 topps football John Elway Rc.

Its always interesting, I read these threads asking about any card, not specific to any sport, and the next 10 answers are baseball cards. I would be curious to know what the split of the boards here is, 70%-30? with 70 collecting mainly baseball?

I, being obviously brighter and a much more astute investor than the rest of you, would have probably still been adding to my hoard of these:

  • I've got that Mr. Mint Doll. That's how I know I have a problem.. I can't convince myself to get rid of it.

I doubt 1986 Fleer Basketball were out on June 28th, 1986. I already had the 1984 Mattingly's and all the other 80's baseball cards. I would have wanted either a Joe Montana Rookie Card or the Bird/Magic Combo card.

Well, sounds almost freudian. Don't tell my wife. She would have a field day with that. Thanks a lot Nam for pointing that out.

That would have been my real choice at the time. That or a 82 Topps Traded Cal Ripken. The 84FU was always just out of reach for me at that time.

This is really a Mr Mint doll? Looks like something child services might use to investigate a "Family Issue". Even in his ads that dude freakes me out. Bald guy holding up a bunch of money, looks like he is making an offer to a woman of the night. Doesnt look like someone I would leave my son alone with. Afraid he would look at his game used collection and start to tell him that his collection sucks!

Being they were called 85-86 Fleer basketball so my guess is they would have been out. If not I change mine to 1985 Star Jordan.

They were called 1985-86 fleer basketball? You might want to check that again... I'd love to see a 1985-86 Fleer Basketball Card.

In June of 86 I think the Eric Davis 86 Donruss was the hot card.

    That or the Canseco.

1981 Granny Goose Dave Revering.......... A throwback card if there ever was one from the 1980s

    1. Regional issue often with condition problems from chip grease (naturally scarce in high grade)
    2. Its a short print (withdrawn from packages after his trade to Yankees)
    3. Its a "true baseball card"...... only obtained FREE for a limited time (summer) with a product or service of some kind, and not as a complete set.

I like the 1981 set, because I remember going into Safeways and checking all the bags of chips for the cards I needed. You could slightly make out the players name through the wax paper bag. I built 4 sets that summer and the Revering was a true rarity. I also gained 10# and some zits eating all those damn chips.

I followed McGwire since his USC days. So I likely would have picked up his 1985 Topps USA.
