I was coveting a Jim Brown rookie around that time, but the folks weren't having it. They were pretty supportive of my cardboard habit though... they got me a 1976 Topps football set and a 1959 Jim Brown card one year for Christmas. With the post-1980 rule in play, I would have hit Pops up for a 1984 Topps Dan Marino rookie.
1986 is when I truly started collecting. I was 13. The 1984 Marino rookie would have been my choice. I had a 85 Topps Gooden that I thought was a huge deal at the time.
Vintage Football Collector and Dolphins fan. First Cards ever collected - 1978 Topps Football. Working on a collection of the Top Ten FB Cards of each year from 1957-1987.
It's funny to think of back then when veteran (non RC) cards like Mattingly, Boggs, Strawberry, Clemens etc were in arguably just as high demand as rookies. I think all of that changed in the late 80s.
