Grades received- classic coin submission

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,632 ✭✭✭✭✭
I think I made out well on this one, despite three coins getting bagged out of ten. Two of them were gambles that I expected to
probably get bagged, but was hoping for a "net grade." One additional coin I hoped would slab got bagged.

The 1853 cent that got bagged for damage/tooling was a red-brown gem, that had a large carbon spot. I expected this to bag,
but it was so nice that I had to try it before selling it (I have too many of this date).

The 1896-O Barber dime bagged for cleaning was dipped to death years ago, and had retoned a bit. No hairlines or whizzing,
just dipped. It has AU55 details, so it was worth trying. Didn't make it. I guess I will not be sending the 1897-O and 1899-O
that are similar to it.

The 1820 large cent that bagged is a Randall Hoard coin that I grade MS66 BN. I have tried it twice, and it was bagged for "Altered
Surfaces" twice. I don't know what PCGS is seeing on this coin, but it will have to stay raw for now. To me, it's the highest grade large
cent I own, among a bunch of PCGS MS65s.

The 1836 half is a bit of a mystery. It's an 1836/1336, O-108a, and I denoted that on the submission form. They slabbed it as a regular
1836. An AU53 1836/1336 is quite a score compared to a regular 1836. I don't know what happened here, as I just checked the Pop. report,
and it seems that this variety has been deleted from the Bust half section of the Pop. report. I recall that there were very few graded before it
disappeared. Anyone have more specific info.?

On the rest of the coins, if they were borderline, I generally got the higher grade. I would not say that PCGS is grading overly tight based on this
submission, despite the few bagged coins.

I keep forgetting that PCGS won't grade a brown cent any higher than 65; that 55 is a super coin!

Nice results. I'm curious to read about the answer on your half dollar.

    Lovely large cent there.

There is a 66BN in the Pop. report for this variety. This coin didn't make 66 BN because it has a lamination under the word CENT, which disrupts the luster, though it is a mint-made defect.

The mystery deepens. The 1836/1336 is listed in the Price Guide, but deleted from the Pop. Report. I guess they don't slab them any more. I may have to call PCGS and ask about this, or post it to the Q&A forum.

It's a pleasure to see well struck 1855 Large & Half Cents; there aren't many of them around. Thanks for sharing.

    Hey rhedden,

My last submission I threw in a 96-o Dime in Au-50/53 range that was not quite original on the obverse, no hairlines or marks, just lightened up/cleaned a bit on the obverse. My gut felling knew it wouldnt holder had it been any other date, but possibly had a 50/50 shot becuase of being a 96-o. Sometimes they give coins like this a little break if decent and marketable. I have seen many not as good in PCGS plastic, trust me. Anyway, no dice, Bagged. I believe had it been 18 months ago or earlier, it may have had a better chance. Came in over the counter last month in a pile of junk of all places. The rest of the grades were dead on, in fact one better date morgan coming in a point higher than I thought. Cha-ching!

What was the receive date and the level of service????

Regular service, handed the coins to them at the last Baltimore show.

They are merciless on Barber dimes if they have been dipped. I don't think you'll get anything into PCGS plastic in this series right now unless it's got the original dirt. My last submission was marred by several bagged Barber dimes that seemingly had nothing wrong with them, except perhaps a light dip.

If yoiu don't mind taking the time and working the 1820, I've heard success stories with PCGS bagged 'Altered Surfaces' submitted to NCS and subsequently graded with PCGS. The color doesn't change, but whatever PCGS is seeing is removed via NCS.

Just a thought, although would take some time as the coin is sent to NCS, and then sent back to you raw for submitting to PCGS.
