What to do with Ikes the bank wont take?

As posted in another thread I've gotten stuck with 40+ of these and I've tried several banks all of which wont take them.

I always thought that banks had to accept legal tender as long as it could be identified.

What in the world happened to them?

I'm sure all those bank tellers were coin collectors and could spot the AT job right when they came in image

I would think they have to accept them too. I guess the times, they are a changin'.

Could spend them in the drive thru. That's always fun image

I paid for lunch one day with 10 Kennedy Halves. The girl working at the counter insisted that I only was giving her $2.50; she even told me that they were only half dollars. Had to call over the manager for his expert counting skills image

If only I could find someone who'd take them I would.

Anyone have anything good for 40 bucks on BST? Maybe I'll just send them in a box as payment image

    two points here:

i would think a bank would have to take them......they can send them to the fed and be reimbursed (the dollars in turn will be destroyed but the bank is not out the $$)

the more obvious answer: sell on ebay as MONSTER TONED

I'd say try to clean them up, and spend them. If all else fails, contact the Mutilated (spelling?) Coin department at the mint. They'll give you a predetermined amount per dollar you send in. I did that with some modern coinage found metal detecting that was beyond hope.

Anyone ever try to feed an Ike to a coinstar machine?

    Just had that thought.

There's nothing wrong with those. Ask for a manager or offer them for deposit.

They are just being Snobby, I gave a teller 3 rolls of pennies once and told her to pass them to another teller. She asked me why and I told her....

"I dug them out of the ground with a metal detector and didnt clean them. Unless you want a drawer full of dirt, Put them in the vault right away and dont forget about them LOL"

Not Regions bank. I've tried to deposit them at two branches locally and one in Nashville, TN. All of them called the "head teller". The head teller disappeared to I guess speak with the branch manager and then came back and said I'm sorry we cant take these.

Also tried two local only banks (Independence Bank and Banterra).

  • Based on your previous description of being rolled, it appears that they may have been in a flood. It should be easy enough to clean them up by soaking them in warm water with a mild detergent.

I could be wrong on this... would have to research it again.. however, years ago, I recall, there was some debate about damaged coins/currency. The final word was, if it can be clearly seen that the item in question (for example, a dollar bill - the larger piece, over half) is legitimate currency, a bank must take it. That may have changed, however, I have seen nothing in trade papers or the media. Cheers, RickO

Get a dremel with a wire brush attachment and whiz the h*ll out of them. That'll make them shiny so the tellers will think they're OK.

They have to accept legal tender but That means more than half of a piece
of paper currency. They don't have to take stuff that is extremely damaged
but the FED will replace it with good curreny.

Coins have to be current to be accepted by a bank. This excludes holed and
severely damaged coins. It could exclude extremely dirty coins but it does noy
    exclude tarnished coins.

Talk to a manager. If they won't call one then walk back and find one.

I would go to my bank and deposit them. They may be considered ugly by some, but they are legal US dollars (unless you made them in your basement). image

If my bank refused to take them I would close my accounts and find another bank. I do not have time for a financial institution that will take some of my US money but not all of it. If we were discussing foreign coins I would understand but this level of service from a bank would be unacceptable to me. JMHO

If you put the dollars in bank supplied wrappers and place

your account number on them, the bank will take them.

I've not been able to find banks that have 38mm dollar wrappers.

Maybe the tellers are afraid of that toxic nuclear waste on them! image

    1. go to the gas station.
    2. put $40 in your tank.
    3. go the check-out and hand the cashier 40 Eisenhower dollars.
    4. they may not be happy, they will have been paid.

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭
Good solution Keets... it will work. I am a persnickety person though.. so I would force feed the bank. Cheers, RickO

I use them as tips. Tips are never refused no matter what the condition.
Or give them to charities, fund drives, red cross buckets, wishing wells, etc.
Or have a giveaway here--I will gladly take them off your hands.image

Or-You could use them as a partial payment on your next tax bill.
Or use the ultimate solution---Sell them on ebay as monster toned coins.image

Some time in a rock tumbler might shine them up enough to facilitate passing them in commerce. Let's face it---they have no value beyond their face value.

don't argue with the bank. Drop them in the mail and I will send you 2 ASE's. It will only cost you 4.80 to ship in a priority envelope
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
Only banks that deal with the fed have to take currency that is to be returned. It does not have to take coin.

Small saving type banks do not deal with the fed and thus can't take ripped/taped etc currency.

All one has to do is clean those coins up and spend them. If a business brings them (rolled) I doubt they would have a problem.

Put them in a baggy. Wrap them with bubble wrap. Drop them in a priority mail box and send them to me.

PM Me your email address and I'll paypal you $47.50 and you can send them to me. I know some folks here in Ca that would be extremely appreciative to receive them!

As for banks not taking them, I think that's total BS on the banks part or else there pretty backwards there in the TN/KY Region.

Make jewelry and find someone who wants a gawdy colorful bald man adorning their neck or wrist.
Sell them at a flea market. Or use them as spacers under the legs of your kitchen table so it doesn't keep rocking back and forth. This also works well under the washer and dryer.
