what provenance supports your claim that yours is THE bat as opposed to any other bat (game or BP) he used in April, 2001?

I wonder who owns the rookie May home run record bat? Or what about the August 8th year in the league home run record bat? What about the ever coveted, rookie, catcher, doubles from mid-may through mid-June, record, game worn with pine tar... or wait that's not pine tar... jock strap? Where does it end that everything is a "record?" It's a nice bat but it's seems silly to me that most everything on earth is a "record." I am not trying to take away from the bat that may, or may not, have been used for this historic record breaking event, just thinking out loud....

Its a sweet bat, but you cant pinpoint exactly when or what games it was used for.

The 4-1-01 means it came from the batch made/ordered at that time by SAM Bats. Thats bat could have been used for anytime in 2001 or even 2002 or later (SAM bats dont break easily).

Is it cracked? Because if it is not cracked, then why did Pujols retire it? Is there a documented story to go with it?

I have a few SAM Bats and all mine have handwritten info from the company like that on them. They are great maple wood bats and at that time were not mass produced.

PS I used the same size bat, very popular.

larryallen, I think you just broke the record for longest message board rant about records. Congratulations.
  • You might be fired up, but so far I see no provenance to say Pujols set any record with the bat you aquired. Sorry, I just don't see why you would post such a statement, while you honestly have no idea if this bat is what you claim it to be.

Not knocking you, just being honest. It's a very nice piece, but how can you make the comments you did about it being a record setting bat, when you don't know??

JFYI, just looking at STL PD photos and such will not be any real proof this was "the bat" that set any record. I hope you do realize this?
  • It is a silly record. But what Pujols did in April 2001 has historical significance; what Kevin Maas did in the summer of 1990 to set the real first month rookie record was a fluke

Thanks CD. I have broken a lot of "records" in my life but this is one of my finest moments. I hope it can be commemorated with a "game used" screen print of my record breaking words. I hope PSA will authenticate it. I mean it is a record so it should be ok!

fine, i should have said it was a rookie year bat used during the month he broke the record (until i have the exact evidence that this was the bat)..happy now......

good for you...but a rookie home run record is nothing to sneeze at....its in the record books so its important in my mind.....

If ALbert Himself said he used this bat, would that be enough for the naysayers?
its a wonder anything interesting gets posted here anymore....this board name should be changed to THE COMPLAINT DEPARTMENT, because thats all there seems to be...(b)itching and complaining....

Lighten up Fandango. You have a bat that MIGHT have been used to set a MINOR, and I do mean MINOR, record. Great. I was primarily questioning how far we go, in our society, to call something a "record." Every event that happens is a "record." It's in the "record books" so it must be important. I could keep track of how big my craps are every day, publish it, with photos of course and then there would be a record book for that. Just because it's in a "record book" doesn't make it that important. To go further, your bat has NO guarantee of really being THE bat and, honestly, you will NEVER know if it was used for that earth shaking home run. NEVER NEVER NEVER. Does Pujols himself even know which exact bat was used that day, 7 years ago? You have a bat and good for you. I think it's in the record books that you vastly overpaid for that bat.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
Fandango, you made a statement without any proof. People here are not just going to believe
you just because you say it is so.

    Please don't take that wrong.

Is it the actual bat he used to hit the record breaking homer?

or is it one of a few bats that he used during that time?

I really didn't see any remarks that were rude.

    Good for you.

I wish I had the bat that I hit the only home run of my little league career with. I hit a laser ground ball down the right field line that just kept going. I was kind of a small kid so I never really crushed the ball hard enough to get it over the fence. After the game, my team's coach told me I got lucky in front of everyone. What a piece of crap.

So now you all understand why I'm such a bitter person.

That sounds like a record breaking bat. The record for Most Laserist Ground Ball Home Run Ever Hit on ____ (fill in the date) by CD. Maybe Fandango can dig it up for you and then you can authenticate it based on your memory of it being THE bat you hit the record breaking home run with?

You did get lucky I saw that game. The right fielder (Alan) threw the ball towards second base but over threw it and it landed in left field, the
left fielder (Gio) kicked it, bobbled it, then threw it over the third base-mens head (some kid with a rooster cut) where the catcher (who the hell nose) (backing up) tried to run you down and just missed you.

Oh I forgot to mention that the 'laser' you hit went through the first base-mens legs (Nam)

Nice bat! I would love to have that! I personally hope you are able to proove that it is the bat that was used to break the record. Pujols is a phenominal player (my favorite current player) and whether it is "the" bat or just "a" bat that he used shouldn't matter. It is a piece of history no matter what someone's opinion is of how unimportant a record the rookie homerun record is. Pujols could go down as one of the greatest players this game has ever seen and even if you did "overpay" for the bat it could very well be worth many times more in the future. Thanks for sharing!

Very nice bat - who did you buy it from?

Does he contract with anyone? Like ASI or something.

If it's a real GU bat and from is rookie year? That's enough for me.

    Thanx for sharing

Why would someone sell it for under $1k if the last one sold for $4,500? That seems hard to believe. I think you got a batting practice "game" used bat. Nice pick up. Maybe he hit some record breaking batting practice home runs?

Maybe he got a deal. Weirder things have happened. Maybe I'm missing something here but why is everyone giving this guy such a hard time? He is obviously excited about his new pickup and wanted to share. I would be the same way. Maybe it is "the" record breaking bat and maybe it's not. Even if it is a "batting practice" used bat it has still been in the hands of one of the greats of the game. Why can't we just let the guy enjoy his new purchase?

  • Without any documented provenance, it's hard to place truly what you have, outside the obvious of the bat being from his rookie season of 2001. That is all you can say for sure.

Albert Pujols cannot honestly tell you when exactly he used that bat, even if you drove it up to his front door and asked him if it was used by him. Sure, I have no doubts Pujols will say he used that bat in 2001. But........ 7 years later, Pujols can't honestly pinpoint an exact day or possible record that he may or may not have set with that bat.

Just try and remember what exact pair of shoes you were wearing in say April of 2001? Do you honestly remember? I know I don't.

Where did he say he paid $1K?

The whole game used market is a scam. The only way to know exactly what it is is to be the guy in the stands who catches it. After that guy takes it to his car, you never know if it is what he says it is. The guy who caught the last Bonds ball had a ball from batting practice in his pocket when he caught it. Kinda makes you wonder about him waiting so long to bring it out for sell. Anyways you have an authentic piece of wood that you claim to be maple. It might have been made from a maple tree that Brangelina had sex under? Could be even more provenance to be found if you can track down the exact tree.
