Unusual PO-1

I recently got this back from PCGS. Made my first PO-1. What makes it really special is that it is no run-of-the-mill PO-1. It's a 90 degree rotated reverse image

Neat 90 degree rotated die. Surprised it's not listed on the label.

Probably because it was not submitted as an error.

  • Correct, it was not sent in as an error.

Funny thing is, I also sent in his long lost brother, another 89-O Rotated 90 degrees. Can't see any die markers on the PO-1 or I would confirm they are the same die. This one graded F-12. Oddly, I expect the PO-1 would go for much, much more than the less worn example!

    GREAT coin Rob!!

And in answer to your question: No, there is no way to look up the population of Poor-01s. The best we can do is compare notes among ourselves on an individual date-by-date basis when those of us who have some enter them into Registry sets. I can tell you, for instance, that there are the following Poor-01 pops at PCGS:

    (2) 1883-P
    (1) 1887-O
    (1) 1890-CC
    (1) 1891-CC
    (1) 1893-CC
    (1) 1895-S
    (1) 1921-D

Also, check out Mad Marty' Morgan set in The Low Ball category; he has several other dates in Poor-01. (I notice that 1889-O has a pop. of 3 in Poor-01, as does the 1921-S.)
    When in doubt, don't.

Like Dennis said - comparing notes with other low grade collectors. If you have a FR2 in your inventory it will show you the pops lower.
Here are the current CC Morgan PO1 pops
    78CC - 2
    79CC - 0
    80CC - 0
    81CC - 1
    82CC - 0
    83CC - 1
    84CC - 1
    85CC - 0
    89CC - 0
    90CC - 1
    91CC - 1
    92CC - 0
    93CC - 1

Between Dennis, Marty and myself, we can account for all except the 2 78CC's.
Someone made the 2nd one within the last couple of months.
The first one has been in the pops for a while.

Interesting indeed. That particular die pair is unknown in uncirculated. It was completely released apparently in 1889 and was used in commerce. Would be interesting to know the highest graded example of it. Your F12 might not be far off of the top of the census.

I have a PO01 in my registry set, so just look and see how many are listed.

PCGS shows 3 listed in PO01

  • Thanks. Interesting that PCGS has low-ball sets but doesn't enable information in the pop reports at the lowest end.

Learn something every day here. Thanks guys.

    To clarify:
Under "My Set Registry" go to "My Inventory" and then at the far right of any coin in your inventory click on "view coin". It will show you the pops higher and lower than the grade you have.

Therefore, if you have a FR02 in your inventory, you can tell how many PO1's there are of the same date/mm.

PCGS needs to change what shows in the low ball registry sets to the pops lower instead of higher.

Nice coin. I have a P01 1890O in my grading set and I love it. I paid strong $$ for it too.
