OT - new granddaughter with problems - update 4/3

My son and his wife had a baby girl tonight at 7:07 (eastern), and her name is Bailey. It was an extremely difficult birth, she was stuck and it took suction and a lot of pulling to get her out. Then she wasn't breathing and CPR was done for 2-3 minutes until we finally heard that first cry. After that they discovered a shoulder injury from the birth, but couldn't tell us how severe it is. We left the hospital without even seeing her, as she's in an incubator on oxygen, but breathing fine on her own - she is going to be okay.

Just a very long and stressful day for all of us, but the end result is a baby who will be healthy soon. I look forward to going to see her in the morning. If anyone reading this is a prayerful person, please pray for Baby Bailey and her mom, Kelly - they both have some healing to do.

If you'd like, feel free to post your favorite coin.

Thank you all - my son just got home and emailed me a picture, and she's quite purple, but they've reduced the oxygen she's on.

By the way sanitarium1inmate - I'm a GrandMA, not Pa!!

And yeah Griv, I WISH I was too young! This is #3 for me after my daughter's 2 sons... they'll all keep me young at heart!

I once mentioned to my Father-in-law that my little baby girl was taking years off my life and he looked at me with a grin, sat back and said, "but they add it back in the end".

Best think he ever said. image

Congratulations on your new grandbaby ... and prayers for both Bailey and Kelly.

My parents apperantly had a similar experience with me (I, of course, do not remember) ... but I know it was hard. I was incubated for two weeks before I got to go home. They say I turned out okay though. image

Seriously, my prayers to you and yours.

  • Received a call from my son at 3 a.m. - our baby needs to be flown to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. There's nothing worse than sitting here helplessly in the middle of the night not knowing what's going on or what to do, waiting for the phone to ring. We're all just on stand-by. I'm sorry this is unrelated to coins, but everyone with a child, please hug them extra tight when they wake up and thank God for their health. There is no coin in the world worth anything close to that precious life.

Congrats, and don't worry, she's in good hands in the NICU @ CHP. My wife worked for 22 years in the NICU at Pennsylvania hospital in Philly, and while I'm not familiar with the folks over there in Pittsburgh, most NICU nurses and docs are some of the most compassionate and dedicated in the medical field, she's in good hands. We are wishing you, the baby, and her mom all the best.

  • Thank you all for your prayers and good wishes. Bailey started out good today then it went backwards. She's back on oxygen and there's bleeding in her brain. Still a long journey ahead; waiting to hear from a neurologist who will be examining her soon. Haven't even seen her yet.

    Edited for spelling.

    Hey Mar,
Your young ones are in my prayers.
God blessed newborns with a toughness that we could only dream about as we get older.
They also heal faster than weeds growing in the garden, Thank God.

  • This is the latest:

Bailey has been slowly getting better. Her mom and dad finally got to get to Pittsburgh today to see her and asked me to go along. Seeing her at first was a mix of emotions - if you could ignore the tubes and ventilator and just see her, she looked 100% better than 2 nights ago when she was born. I saw her have a couple seizures while the nurse was there but they didn't seem bad to me. She hasn't stopped breathing through one since yesterday, now it's mostly her legs. They did an EEG while we were there, then we spoke with a neurologist. A seizure lasts 10 seconds or longer, and Bailey's are now about 4 seconds long, so they're not calling them that anymore. There are 2 small spots in her brain they feel will heal, and those are responsible for the "spells". All news was encouraging, and it's possible she'll get disconnected from at least one tube tomorrow, and maybe be home next week instead of the 2 weeks we were first told.

I thank you all for the prayers - they are being answered and we feel them.

    Marlene

i hope all goes well. i dread the day i have to go through this with
my future 1st child. how stressful!

chin up! the baby will be fine and smiling soon!
  • fc, this is very uncommon, most births are fantastic and babies are healthy. Ours is a little sick but there are a lot much worse - we know that and still feel blessed. As everyone has said, I'll have her filling up her first Whitman "penny" folder before we know it!

Glad to hear things are going better. Babies are pretty darn resilient. Just think of what they have to go through just to be born, then think of how many are accidentally bumped around or dropped by tired parents, then think of those razor-sharp fingernails they're constantly scratching themselves with and how fast they heal. Better yet, think of how much fun everyone will have watching her destroy a birthday cake a year from now.
  • Congratulations and I will keep you in my prayers.

My prayers are with you and your family. My son(who is now 2 1/2) has had a very bad seizure disorder since he was 8 months, so I understand what you are going through. He is doing better but has a long road to go. Your Granddaughter is a cute one and I hope that she continues to get better!
