    Just out of curiosity, how does something like this happen? Impurities in the mixture was my first thought.

    Nice planchet error...I like the dramatic effect of this type of error.

    Yep, the error occurs from impurities in the planchet stock. Okay, so actually it's the stock for making blanks and not planchets, but under the "PDS" system of error designation, it falls under "planchet."

    Edited to add - By the way, if you picked that up in a bargain bin, you did just grand! image
