Got the 100mm Macro! No modern jokes now!

I have no formal lighting set up or way to hold the coin. I simply stood it up and shined a light on it. Period. I'll be taking digital photography lessons this summer at the ANA so I'm sure my skills and equipment will improve. In fact, I'm sure it will improve before then, but I thought it would be fun to show this off.

These are my very first (in-focus) images taken with this lens (Tokina 100mm). Holy cow! This is a night and day difference from those 3MP pictures I can take with my wife's point and shoot. The lighting wasn't perfect, especially the reverse, but with a 10MP DSLR and this lens, I can tell the quality can be hugely impressive once I really start to get a handle on things.

I have a remote control shutter which I should be using once I have it setup on a tripod or copy stand. I'm sure I'll have to get an extra light or two. The coin is in an ICG slab (a Keifer wedding commemorative!).

A macro lens, although terribly important for good coin photos, also has a good use for Bugs!

Very nice. image Don't forget to put on a hair net. It'll make getting to your hair a little tougher when the urge to start pulling it out hits.

Nice shot, but without a copy stand that'll be about as good as you can do.

I just recently bought myself the shutter release remote and it's worth it's weight in gold (well before gold shot up! image). Have fun with the new lens!

Becoka...I'm already trying to figure out how late I can stay up without falling asleep at work tomorrow! Seriously though, I dug out a handful of coins I happen to keep at the house to really test drive this new puppy. Stay tuned.

Cool! I hope you don't mind if I also post a Macro shot or two in Your Macro Lens Thread...

This is the date of a modern roosevelt dime. A particularly soft, craptacular strike it looks like to me. What surprised me is that the fine scratches on the dime at this resolution ended up being quite colorful!

The next one is a 'guess what' sort of shot. Should be pretty obvious to the educated folks on this forum. Under lighting like this, gold is just so many dots.

    image

Get a tripod or stand as your next step into the Macro world. Then you can adjust the lighting as you watch through the viewfinder and really fine tune things.

    That is so fitting!

Keep working on the photography. You've got some really good equipment to work with. It is very enjoyable!
