Is it AT or what? If it's not AT, what could have caused that toning in such a short time period?

No AT here. Sitting in with a bunch of other 70s in a Intercept Shield box in a bank vault. I went by today to pick up a few coins to send out and I saw this one. It was slabbed early (FS) and certainly would have never made 70 looking like this so your guess is as good as mine.

It's definitely natural. I have many gold commems and eagles that do the same thing that starts in less than a year. I was going to sell my $5 SF commems but when I took them out the toning looks spectacular and am now considering keeping them.

As far as what causes it I would have to go with the mint rinse residue interacting with the air in the storage condition.

'Nicely toned' is... to me... an oxymoron... Especially when applied to gold. Cheers, RickO

I had one a while back that had similar coloring, seemed to be wiped though. I'm curious as to what causes this. It was invisible at one angle and very prominent at another.

Here it is in a Photoshop template. By the way, a web version of Photoshop is available today for FREE! Go to the Adobe and get it!

I bought a $5 2007-W AGE MS-70 First Strike off ebay with similar toning, and I returned it.

I think that toned gold must be an acquired taste.

Looks like rust, did you buy it on E-Bay from China??? image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

My photo isn't as good as yours but this one has almost the same look in hand. Mine has a bit more ruby red rim toning. It is in a PCGS MS70 holder.

Almost exactly. Where have you keep this coin since you've had it and was it like this when you got it?

Griv - We acquired the coin off ebay on 2/25/07 - It has been stored in a blue pcgs storage box inside a safe since we bought it. I think that it had a little toning when we bought it but the color has since intensified. Unfortunately I was very inexperienced at collecting at the time so I didn't really pay attention to or document the difference in color.

By the way, I also like the look of this type of toningimage

not wiped. sometimes toning appears in streaks. i think this is what may have given you the impression it was wiped.

Most safe's are notorious for holding too much moisture inside.

I have a few with similar toning but really just spots. One coin has the toning in Liberty's hair and makes her look like a redhead. This is the only one I have that has toning all the way around and really adds to the look. I seriously blame the members here for getting me hooked on toned coins. I have a 39 Mercury on it's way with absolutely beautiful rainbows. I'm working on a toned WWII complete set 39-45 which should be fun.

Not uncommon for the AGE's to tone like that....it's 10% copper cousing the toning in the coins. Enviroment has nothing to do with it.
