What a fun way to close the week and go into the weekend image
I do think that simply listing coin/date/mm/proposed condition (or range) would have been the easiest way and not been too hard. Certainly it wouldn't have taken as long as all the responses being rude to people image

Even having a reverse shot of all the coins probably would have only taken a few minutes and appeased a lot of people as they would have enlarged the photos to see mintmarks and what the coins looked like.

Hey Russ, FYI, nobody is talking about the coins themselves. They are talking about the presentation (or lack of) of the coins. Get a clue.image

No, over at the BST board they are talking about the coins themselves, or did you just not get it when some posts described them as commnn date worn out coins not worth much above melt?

<< <i>Sarcasm? Ha, surely you jest!

I came in, saw a title for some lot of non descript coins for 6K, saw you were gettimg your ass handed to you on a platter and calmly told you to step back and take a look at the picture from the other side, with the rest of us.

At NO TIME did I ever hear you offer these coins for 2K.

As far as I'm concerned, seeing what I have thus far, I've seen enough. I have no desire to have any part of this sideshow.

    Get a grip, Dude!

I've read most of the posts in this thread...not all but most. Now, Gecko, I've got but one thing to say...
get over it and don't worry about it. I get flamed every other post on the BST but I've had a lot of great
    deals done as well.

In between the stupid posts you've also received a lot of good advice.

The thing is, in this hobby there simply is not a "greener pasture" for a little guy to take his stuff to than this very board, if you can learn to use it with a little bit of etiquette and finesse.

One other thing to think about -- if the lot has a wholesale value of $2000, you might very well realize that or better if you sell the coins individually. Anyone who buys the whole lot, though, will be buying them for resale. In essence, they will be looking to make a reasonable profit by doing the work you don't want to do by making two dozen individual sales. So, how much is that work worth? $200? $400? If you want $2,000 because that is what the coins are worth, you need to sell them one at a time. After all, how many of us were actually looking for that particular group for our own collections? Me, for instance, I really like your classic head cent. That said, I don't want the rest of it. So I'd either pay you well for that coin, or I'd buy the whole lot with some room to make it worth bothering with, like 15% or so. Get it? Nobody works for free -- not you, not us, not anybody.

So, you can take your ball and go to other playgrounds, it's fine, nobody will care -- but you'd do better to stay right here and learn the ropes.

  • After reading this thread and the BST thread this is based on...

Honestly ... neither this thread nor that one deserve a well thought out and polite response...

The thread title... "I must be losing my mind!" image

It seems to me that one can not lose what one does not have...

That is about as civil a post as I can muster...
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image
  • WOW!!! I have been entertained to say the least!!! Keep the thread going, its better than any dang sopa opera I have ever seen!!!

I have a cool coin I would like to sell for 500.00.... It wholesales for 200, and I don't think I will even show a picture. I don't have time!!! If you don't offer me 500 by 10pm I am gonna sell on ebay and flame away!!!!

  • gecko109, you act like an arse on the boards, so no one really gives a crap and will flame you, as you flame others. Don't throw stones in a glass house dick.

I had seen gecko109's BST thread when it was first listed and I have to back him up in that he did not mention $6K as it's value at that time, however, he also did not list any value, if I recall correctly, and simply asked for a best offer on the lot.

I've been on these boards for quite a while and have noticed that the "make an offer" threads on the BST typically perform quite poorly and I cannot blame folks for not always embracing that style. Personally, I strongly believe that if you are offering a coin in a non-auction venue that you should know what price you will open negotiations at and should likely also know what price you will accept. The image of the group is actually quite nice, though very little information can be gleaned from dates and mintmarks. Some information, though, can be gleaned on surfaces and surface manipulation, which can help to determine that not all of the coins were problem-free. Of course, I do not recall gecko109 claiming they were problem-free, either. A glance at the inventory would indicate to me that the G4 1807 DBH would be the single most valuable coin, if problem-free, and this is a $200 or more piece by itself. I did not add up anything else. Is this lot worth $2K to the right person? Perhaps. Am I the right person? Not for this lot.

By the time I read the BST thread there were about a dozen responses and I have not read past that point. I should add two points to this conversation, though, and they might help gecko109 or they might not. The first point is that folks are not supposed to respond to questions within their BST thread more than once during any day as this may be construed to be employing a masked TTT to bring the thread to the top. The second, and more important point, is that engaging in a constant adversarial relationship with other board members is most likely not the best way to make people either want to do business with you or to encourage folks to trust you. Not everyone wants to debate every point and many folks come here more to relax than to spar. Lastly, these brush fires that pop up can be trivial, but they can leave a reputation with a person in the minds of some members and this reputation may at some point make a future transaction more difficult than it need be.

Hmm, odd is I think the lot is close to 2 k in value and perhaps would have sold for more total dollars with each coin listed seperately with rev-obvs pics. There are some items there that would have sold right away at a reasonable price in my opinion. I would have looked and perhaps bought some of these myself.

  • Here's what I don't understand. As you said, it was a presentation issue. I agree. Problem is, as you say, you have been on here daily for the past few months, and you still didn't think that to have a solid chance of selling anything you have at anywhere near an acceptable price that you wouldn't need to be as specific as possible? I'm sure you know that as a whole the crowd here has a pretty good clue about what something may be worth. Knowing this, you still didn't bother taking the time to atleast be somewhat specific as to what you were selling. As far as I'm concerned, the way it looks, you never really had any intention to get a sale from here in the first place.

Nobody on here throws that kind of money around here or even makes offers on things they don't know anything about. Thousands of dollars in coins are sent and bought sight unseen everyday, but they know what to expect when they get them, and have earned reputations to be able to do this.

As an example, I'd like to throw out, that 1 hour prior to your listing, I posted quality pics, descriptions and expected prices of coins I was selling on the BST. Within 40 minutes, I had two people interested, 1 offer and sold everything I was selling. I knew what I wanted, let everyone know, and someone made a legitimate counter offer.

Lesson learned is that if you want what you know it's worth, take the time to earn it.
