I know exactly how you feel Mike. I had to be a "fill in" ump once. I was there to watch my brother's little leauge team play my best friend's team and the ump never showed. The coaches both asked if I could do it, I couldn't say no.
I thought I did a good job but all the stupid parents were yelling at me. I was in a no win situation. If I made a call against my friends team, the coach and the parents would start yelling "his brother plays for the other team...of course".
That was too much to put on a 15 year old.......I never did it again >>
About 15 years ago I had to fill in ump for my little brothers team in which I was also one of the coaches. I did my very best and was as impartial as I could be - its a lot tougher to ump than people think. The tough part was calling my little brother out on strikes when he stood there like a statue and watched the pitch go right by. I actually apologized when we got home after the game he still was pissed at me LOL.

And, yes, parents are the worst ... and umpires with tight strike zones. >>
When I say tight strike zone, I'm talking about the strike zone that I'm used to in High School and 16 and under AAU baseball. I don't call everything like that, it's just that I sort of slip into it sometimes. When you're behind the plate everything happens in fast forward. You rush to make a call, when really you have more time than you think to call it and eventually regret it some of the time.
I think I am a 'everyman' at the Furniture company I work for. I have been everything from an upholsterer, trainer, supervisor, manager, 'master upholsterer' (basically a substitute for anyone that misses work), line leader, and anything else. I'm supposed to be transfered back to 'line leader' (kind of a supervisor only over 9 people) starting next Monday, but I'm thinking about checking into another company where I can work nights long enough to get my teaching certificate and go into high school teaching. That way, my chemistry degree isn't being wasted.

Navy Recruiter for a couple more months, then back to the submarine fleet. Looking forward to that, getting tired of recruiting. Hopefully get stationed in Hawaii for the next 3 years.
I love my job but still trying to decide if I made the right decision to stay with it last year. I turned down an offer of appointment with the FBI as a Special Agent, and it was my last opportunity as I am now 37 and now ineligible for their hiring as a Special Agent. That is a very competitive position to get, and it took about 8-9 months of processing, tests, interviews, security clearances, etc., but I turned it down because they would not guarantee me where I would be assigned or even in what state it might be. My family was all on board I thought and then one day, my 10 year old son asked that I not take it, so he wouldn't have to move and make all new friends. I know my parents were stable when I was young, so I decided to do the same for him and stay where I am.
Now, I can retire in 5 years and 2 months from my current job and begin to draw a pension for the rest of my life and still do something else if I wish, but I will always wonder what it would have been like to be with the FBI and the experiences I could have had. But for once in my life, I made a major decision which I didn't put myself first, it's amazing what we will do for our children, and for those of you that don't have any yet, it will be one of the greatest and fulfilling journeys, of your life.

Mike,
I wouldn't fret. As a person who works in the security/intelligence world, I can say not working for the FBI is a good thing. Private security is where it's at. Better funding, better technology, better working conditions, much better pay, and, in the right company, better benefits. My health/optical/dental insurance (if I were married and/or had children, they'd be included), company car, car insurance, and gasoline are all covered, as well as various stock options and plank ownership rewards.
Besides, 5 years until retirement? You can't beat that.

Director - Database Administration for a bill payment processing company. One of these days I would love to work with data that I actually enjoy managing. Of course I say that because it's audit time in three of our locations, those of you that deal with them in any way know that isn't ever fun. Anyway, just imagine all of the fun things that could be done with PSA's data. There is so much potential...
Full time student studying Network and Systems Administration. Clean carpets as a part time job working my way through school. Any heads up from the IT guys here as where to focus my studies or certs would be greatly appreciated!

Retired sports reporter. (I interviewed most every one of the players on the cards we collect, but I never asked for an autograph. It just isn't done.) I took early retirement because of a huge buyout. Now, I play golf as much as possible, and work part-time editing a small paper.
Academic Advisor/Recruiter for a University - I sit and listen to students complain all day about how they don't know what to do with their life! Honestly, a great job, I would not trade it for the world.
