I still remember the day I used to think anyone who paid more than a hundred dollars for a coin was not all there. Now I'm too embarassed to say how much, and for what.
More than the ex knows, and that the lawyer will discover. No paper trail, etc. Actually, I've spent more on a piece of antique glass than I've spent on a coin, twice as much! And glass glass breaks. I've misplaced coins because they are SO small. I'm still looking for a 1964 PCGS 69DCAM Kennedy!
You only live life once, enjoy it like it's your last day. It just MIGHT be!
"Men who had never shown any ability to make or increase fortunes for themselves abounded in brilliant plans for creating and increasing wealth for the country at large." Fiat Money Inflation in France, Andrew Dickson White (1912)
$675 twice. Nothing more on a coin. Not comfortable on things to go much higher ( at the time). now with my knowledge of my niche and also $2.5 lib gold i can go more. 2.5 indians im still a grade or 2 low. for whatever reason

Personally it was probably an AU58 $3 gold which I paid $1500 for a number of years ago. For a customer, the highest was a hair over 300k for the brass Continental Dollar a few years ago in LA. Also purchased a Half Disme in UNC for 6 figures
Long time ago I paid $7200 for a 1889-CC $ PCGS MS62. A dealer actually liked it so much he offered to try an upgrade at his cost. No strings attached. Why not? I know he was going to hound me until I sold it to him if it upgraded, it did not. Got it back and later sold it for a $300 profit. Number 1 coin I wish I never sold.

$3,850 for a '32-D quarter in MS64. That was about 10 years ago, when Washingtons were hot and still going up. They got up to around $6,000; wish I'd sold it then, but I still have it.
I don't expect to ever spend more than $100 and even at that it won't be any time soon.
I may do without a lot of things but I'm happy with what I do have!
I have a hard time justifying spending a lot of money on any hobbies when there are more practical things it could be used for...like saving up for a car that always works, not just when it feels like it.
Edit to add: My most on a US coin is $25. I don't remember which one, I paid $20 for one of them and $25 the same day, for a Flying Eagle cent and a 3-cent silver. Neither are in great shape but I don't care. I don't think I've imaged either one yet.

I felt it was a deal then, and still do. It still is my favorite coin, even though I don't actively collect large cents.

For me, my current record is 10950 for the nicest PCGS MS 64 1919-S that I've ever seen. I was glad to acquire it.
I'm sure that this record will fall sometime in the near future.
Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

should we include values for coins we purchased while acting as someone's agent?

Todd - I'd love to hear the story behind this. I would be an absolute wreck being responsible for that amount of cash for any length of time!

Coins - perhaps $1000. I spend much more on photographs.
