Next on the "I get people out with smoke and mirrors" closers list is Todd Jones. Jamie Moyer is the king of starters with absolutely no stuff.

two in a row, hopefully we Marte can get back on track, he was lights out last year. Bay really has come around, hitting over 300 in his last 13 games. Laroche man come on.

  • I was at the game last night great seats. Great battle back but we gave up too many runs early. Laroache needs to ride the pine for awhile. I couldn't believe how many Phillie fans were at the came, I almost thought I was in Philly instead of PNC. I was hoping Ryan Howard would have started he did pinch hit and play in the field he his a huge man.

Did anyone read Morris's comments about getting cut? Dude sounded like he already gave up a long time ago. Said he would turn down any new teams offers and wanted to start his new retired life. Why didn't he just retire at the beginning of the season if he felt that way? Pirates owe like over 9 million for that loser.

In the loser bowl looks like we won by a 2 field goals. I hope, I repeat I hope this starts something for Duke and he can start to get some consistency. He actually had as many K's as BB's this time! I was excited that Burnett came back but he got shelled.

It looks like Laroche is getting out of his slump so hopefully we can trade him or Bay and get McCutchens up here soon.

I wish we could play the Giants every game. Dumatrait? Nady really coming on this year as well. It will be kinda sad if we have career years out of Nady, Paulino, McClouth to only lose another 100 games.

I think the Michaels deal was insurance for when they make a deal for either Nady, Bay or Laroche. I would actually deal either Nady or Laroche just because I think Bay when healthy has more upside. They will have to bring either Morgan or McCutchens up and I think Michaels is there in case either implodes. We know Morgan can't come off the bench and be productive. Also who know if Mclouth turns back into a pumpkin after the AS break or even before?

I can see them trading Duke and an OF to a team like the Padres or the Cardinals if either team is still in the race come July.

  • Hey, how about them Pens. At least we have some teams here in Pittsburgh that play for championships.
  • MorgothMorgoth Posts: 3,950 ✭✭✭
Worst to first in 2 seasons, wow! Some sports actually have competitive balance. Seriously, the Pens drafted very well. But you can see the biggest difference between BB and Hockey, the Pens were able to sign the real #1 overall pick while the Pirates have to find players they can sign with their picks because so many hold out and want millions before even playing.

The Pirates are displaying the schizo behavoir of a classic losing franchise. Last season their pitching was the only bright spot with Gorzelanny and Snell becoming dependable 1 and 2 pitchers. Bay was way down and thought maybe done in the Burgh, Sanchez and Wilson injured and no real CF made 2007 a tough year.

We all thought we just needed some hitting and one or two pitchers to step up and 2008 could at least be a return to non losing. But no, our hitting has been stupendous compared to projections. Bay and Nady each having big years and then they get a huge surprise in Mclouth being an AS in his first year starting. They now have 5 legitimate hitters with Sanchez, Bay, Nady, Laroche and Mclouth in the lineup. Paulino is showing promise and Jack Wilson is back.

Now our pitching is in the tank again. Snell and Gorzellany are just awful. If our rotation was renumbered today it would be 1- Duke, 2-Dumatrait, 3- Maholm, 4-Snell and 5-Gorzellany or about inverse of the beginning of the year. Dumatrait couldn't even pitch for the Reds last year! They can't seem to have all three phases of the game going at one time. Also the pirates have 4 former 1st round draft picks on their pitching staff. Maybe it's time to draft a 3rd baseman.

  • The Pirates drafted Alvarez from Vanderbilt today. Seems to be the real deal. It is nice to see them go after the best player available and not another pitcher.

See we have had 3 quality starts in a row by Dumatrait, Duke and Mahlom and went 2-1. We should be feeling good as the #1 and #2 guys are set to go but no Snell and Gorzo has been awful this year and we won't sniff .500 if those two don't at least pitch average (.500) the rest of the way. Has Bullington pitched since been called up?

Duke struck out more than he walked!!!!!!! Maybe he has figured something out, Snell and Gorzo had decent last outings (no wins though) so maybe there is some hope with those two. Big rumor in PA is that if Snell and Gorzo don't show some control in their next few starts one or both will go down to Indy. They have Bullington and Burnett up right now who could step into their shoes. Maybe this will snap them out of their funk. Good for the Pirates to not baby these guys anymore and say to everyone if you play like crap your going back to the minors.

Well we got Snell to get a win, now lets see if Gorzo has one in him as well. If they can just get too a few games over .500 before the AS break we might have a chance for a non losing season. We have been hovering around .500 for 2 months now.

I would like to see the Pirates do well. It's sad what Boob Selig's economic structure has done to some great, traditional midwestern franchises.

If we can start signing the best prospects in the draft our team should turn around. I don't know who's fault (Selig or cheapskate owners) but we have not drafted the best players every year due to signability issues. Bullington is an example.

Wow been awhile but how sad has it gotten for the Pirates??

They just sent down Gorzelanny and it sounds like he feels he has been pitching hurt but the team thinks he is being a wuss. It almost feels like they have given up on the guy. When your GM has to answer questions like this, it's bad

<< <i>"We're certainly not abandoning Tom. Hopefully, he can overcome the adversity and deal with the frustration. The goal is for us to get him back to (being) the guy who won a lot of games for us last year." >>

or how about this one for a confidence booster

<< <i>“We got to a point where we’re not talking about Tom Gorzelanny with 14 wins and 200-plus innings last year,” Huntington said. “We’re talking about a pitcher that is running out there with, unfortunately, a 6.50 ERA, so that’s what we’re replacing.” >>

or how about Neals take on the replacement pitcher for Gorzo

<< <i>“John Van Benschoten’s career track record has not been good,” Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. “His last start certainly wasn’t something that made you comfortable and confident but his work to date has shown he has the ability. He just needs to go apply it.” >>

Oh and we just released Brian Bullington without him winning one freakin game in the majors. Nice use of the overall #1 pick. He didn't get hurt (to the point of disability) he just sucks!!!!!!

And we have benched Freddy Sanchez due to a prolonged hitting slump.

So in a nutshell this last week has seen our #1 Pitcher sent down to the minors and possibly traded off the team, a former batting champ benched due to a "hitch" in his swing and our the #1 overall draft pick from 2002 released without winning 1 game for the team.

    NICE no wonder we suck

Oh and another thing that makes me mad is this, I agree with sending players down to work on their stuff. However, in the case of Gorzo they think he might be there the whole year and felt it was bad for the team to work on stuff in the majors. Well that is all well and good if you actually have replacement players worth a damn.

Van Benschoten has the highest ERA in MLB history for pitchers with 75 innings or more.

Gorzellany before the last meltdown with the Brewers pitched 6.1 innings, gave up 2 ER and had 8 K's against the Rays.

I can't believe that he is sooooooooooo bad we had to send him down for the season??????

There is alot more to this story than what is being said in the media.

They said they are going to limit Gorzo to a 30 to 40 pitch count and that will cause him at least 1 month longer in the minors to rebuild his arm once he gets his mechanics fixed.

Tom said in an interview he is hurt but the Pirates doctors have cleared him, I see this ending up in a trade for oh Julio Lugo maybe.

Maholm is by far their best starter with Duke behind him. After that they have been awful this year. The Yankees were just unlucky in getting to face one of their only "good" starters. I am sure if it would have been Van Benshoten, Snell or Dumatrait the Yankees would have won.

That said, Mclouth is on fire, 18 HRs and 62 RBI's before the break and he didn't even beat out Nyjer Morgan in spring training.

Sweep!!!!!!!! Might be our only away sweep all year or decade. The Pittsburgh papers are really hammering away on the Pirates lack of pitching depth. I want Gorzelanny back and end this Herrara/Benschoten nightmare. Bullington got picked up by the Indians and it would be just their luck for him to turn it around with them.

I say trade Xavier Nady back to the Mets for Oliver Perez at least he is a MLB player not like what we have now which is 1 decent starter in Maholm, 1 #5 guy in Duke, 1 lost confidence former ace in Snell and 2 guys who should be in AA.

Yeah, 4 in a row. Herrea lowered his ERA from 19.75 to 9.50!!!!! Big bright side is Bay is back to being a great player and Mclouth is on fire! I say we trade Nady and keep Bay and Mclouth. Bring up McCutchen and go from there.
