wow! I'm thinking proof as well. I've never seen business strike planchets so clean. There's a spot on Ms Liberty's cheek but it's not at all distracting to me given how clean the fields are. Nice pickup...

I haven't actually picked this one up. I just saw it on eBay, and it looks exactly like what I want for my type set. I thought I'd get some second opinions.

As far as strike goes, I noticed that not all the stars are fully detailed, and some of the wreath seems flat. BUT, I'm not an expert on this series, and I don't know how much detail one can expect in those areas.

Any large cent experts want to weigh in on the strike?

Exquisite detail. My notes do not have this date as Bay Area (1852 and 51/81 - have seen a couple dandies from that fellow). I have an MS62/60 EAC graded that is pretty similar in strike so am not sure on the proof - need to leave that to the real experts. It is much better struck than my 1854 N19 MS65 which is a CC1.

From the pictures, I would call it a PQ 65! Very nice large cent, and, if I had an extra $815, I'd bid on this one!

Hmmm, not a 4 with only one soft star and all else clean, I'd go 65BN sticker-able. Now I'm off to go have a look seeimage

Very nice. 64-65BN, I suppose. EAC grade would be 65, slabbed, net AG3. image Do you still have the foil wrappers?

N10 - italic 55. The proof coins of this year were
struck from the N10 and N11 dies. Is this coin a proof ???

Crap, so how many of you are going to bid on this coin now? Assuming it is a business strike then it should go for about $1000-$1200. If someone determines it to be a proof, then I feel really bad for the seller image

Either way, I probably will not have enough money to purchase it.

I think this coin is a mis-attributed PF. Every single 1855 Large & Half Cent I've seen has mushy denticles and soft stars, usually between 2:00 and 5:00 or 6:00 on both obverse and reverse. 1855 has most consistent poorly struck Braided Hair Copper, yet the denticles are complete, and only one star is minutely incomplete.

I like the coin, but not in a 5 holder. The big carbon / discoloration spot in front of the ear is a real eye-catcher, and I don't think it is a planchet flaw. The 5s I've seen might have a small carbon spot, maybe two of them. If there is no carbon on the coin, typically, you see a noticeable contact mark on Miss Liberty's face, cheek, or jaw line.

The carbon on the cheek is a killer for me. I think it's growing since holdered. I don't see PCGS grading it a 5 with a spot that size?
  • JoeLewisJoeLewis Posts: 1,907 ✭✭✭✭
Someone convinced the guy to end the auction early with a $950 BIN. If that thing turns out to be a proof, then I feel very sorry for that seller. The carbon spot doesn't bother me at all. If I had the money right now I would have bought that coin in a heartbeat!

If someone from this forum bought this coin, please let us know if it turns out to be a proof. That would be a major score!

To me, a RB is not necessarily beter than a BN (especially when a BN looks like this!)

I agree. The edge of the rim at the denticles are just to sharp and the rim is to flat for a bussness strike.

Mis-attributed proof?? Not so my friends. The coin is
a very early die strike and near perfect. At the end of it's die
life the stars were very weak and the 6th star was obliterated.
The coin shown is one of the best of its kind. No one alive today
has seen a brilliant perfect proof or perfect MS coin with total
mint shine (if so it was doctored).
And then comes the thaught that Newcomb himself
may have have had this coin in hand.
