Merry Christmas to all!!! Centerpiece coin.

This 1802 dollar is the Centerpiece of my coin collection. I bought it about 15 to 20 years ago. It is (woefully under)graded at MS 61 in an old PCGS rattler. I'd grade the obverse a 63 and the reverse a 64 (not that I've got a lot of experience grading DB material). In the summer of 2005 I took it to the ANA convention in SF just to get a feel for what it is worth these days, and was offered between 63 and 64 money for it. It really was quite amusing in that while I was browsing the bourse I literally had dealers following me from table to table trying to either (A) hold on to the coin a little longer, or (B) try and buy it from me. Needless to say, that's the only time that's happened to me. Since then I've taken it to a couple of Santa Clara shows to show to board members. I'll show it to the occaissional dealer there too, and again they all go ga-ga.
The coin is very well struck, with just a little softness in the breast (after all, a lot of material has to get in there). The shield is well struck, so I'm not sure why in the image it's a bit fuzzy, it must have something to do with the scan/picture. The image (on my monitor) is a little darker than the coin actually is. Also, the wings of the eagle have a faint gunmetal blue hint to them. Anyhow, this seemed an appropriate coin to put on this site to celebrate this time of year.
Best wishes to everyone for a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Happy and Healthy New Year!!!

Just to share with everyone I attributed your dollar.
It is a 1802 Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle Dollar with Normal “Narrow” Date Broken “T” in LIBERTY... BB-241, B-6, R-1
This marriage comes nicely struck.
Nice Post SkyMan!
I knew it would happen.
A couple of points, not every dealer was willing to pay 63-4 money on it, but there was more than one. The MINIMUM grade that ALL dealers in the last couple of years that I've shown the coin to agreed upon was a 62 and more than a few say 63. (There was one dealer say that he knows someone who doctors coins who could get it into a 65). I think one reason that it is such a popular coin is that it hasn't been messed with (or if it has, it was a LONG time ago). Second, I was sorely tempted to sell, as we were talking a lot of money, but being a coin collector first and foremost it was one of those deals where I realized that once I sold it I wouldn't have it (or something like it) ever again. Finally, personally I just like it because the DBHE is my all time favorite US coin design. So, the good Lord willing, I'll continue to hold on to this sucker for at least a couple of decades more.
EDITED TO ADD: SomeGuy, thank you for the info! I only had figured out the Breen designation.

Great coin, I have looked at this photo numerous times over the past few months always hoping I can someday afford, and find, such a nice one for my set.
thanks.

Sy, why do you think it is in a 61 holder? Are there any glaring problems that are not readily visible in the pix?

<< <i>This post leaves me scratching my head. MS61 coins are, in general, "problem coins" (with all due respect to those that collect in that grade!). But these pix are of a glorious looking apparently original coin.

I think that there are two things going on. First off, my understanding is that PCGS was WAY tough on early dollars when they started. While I have noticed a fair amount of other coins in old rattlers I have yet to see in the last 5 to 10 years any other rattler early dollars at shows. Second, depending on how you tilt the coin, there is a VERY minor amount of rub on the cheekbone of Liberty and where her right breast meets her drapery. Given that there is nothing of the sort on the reverse I would guess it is some sort of cabinet friction from way back when. Given that the least amount I was offered in 2005 from dealers that specialize in early material was $25,000 and the most was $42,500 (with other dealers willing to contemplate making offers at that point) I don't think that the rub is anything serious.

I like it in the rattler best!
<< <i>SkyMan, any plans to resubmit for an upgrade? Or perhaps the speculation about its grade in current holder is more valuable?

At this point in time I'm not planning on resubmitting it as I'm not planning on selling it. I would be interested in the Forum's view though as to whether to eventually resubmit prior to selling.

You just made my year! I've never seen one of these before (in a color photograph anyway). What a beautiful coin! Whatever you do, DON'T SELL!

You have hit the nail on the head when you stated that you want to keep the beautiful coin. Enjoy the coin, not the plastic. It is one that will not pass many hands on this forum. Treasure it as it is.
