SGS crossover to PCGS?

I have a couple of Morgan VAM's in SGS holders and was going to send them to PCGS for crossover. The coins are are graded by SGS as MS65, but look like they might be MS63. Does anybody on the forum have any experience on crossover of any SGS slabs to PCGS?

Thanks,
Charlie

Before responding to your question, can you disclose what you know about SGS and their reputation as a grading service?

I cracked an SGS MS65 and PCGS graded it MS62.

I know SGS has a crappy reputation for grading, but I just couldn't resist buying a nice VAM in one of their slabs. I was just hoping a SGS MS coin didn't come back from PCGS as AU.

okay, my first advise is to get the coins out of the SGS holder. Then, if you like what you see, submit to PCGS. Crossover does not make sense.

Crack them out and submit them raw. Most knowlegable collectors and dealers treat coins in third teir holders as being raw anyway.

Count yourself lucky if you can get one of their coins into a PCGS holder, period. Throw yourself a party if you can get it into a holder just 2-3 points below the SGS grade. An MS65-66-67 coin coming back from PCGS as an AU? That could happen.
    When in doubt, don't.

Exactly who the heck is doing the grading at SGS if it's so out of whack? Probably a good chunk of us who read this board can do a better job.

Conventional wisdom is that it's not incompetence driving the grade that ends up on the label as much as it is greed.
  • One will grade MS62 and the other will bodybag as being cleaned.

If the "grader" is that incompetent, then why hasn't he been sued out of business or at least "dressed down" formally by various numismatic organizations?

The SGS coins I have are in a yellow/orange holder, is that the same company as the one Russ posted?

    Way to go Russ!

That's the only grade-for-grade crossover I've ever heard of for an SGS coin.

edited to add: Oops! didn't notice that it started out as a 70. Minus 3 points is no big surprise. Still, that's still an awesome buy!

  • russ, did i read that right? bought for $12 sold for $700? nice if so.

Isn't it going from SGS SMS70 to PCGS MS67DCAM? Still, great find!

Bought that as a three coin 1965 to 1967 set as a BIN for $33. The other two coins were so bad I spent them. image

Edited to add: I didn't actually submit it as a crossover. I cracked it out, or rather slit the seal and popped it open.

    OP....can you grade morgans?
Do you know, can you recognize, what would bodybag a coin at PCGS?

If so, don't worry about crossover. Crack them out, inspect them, then decide if you want to submit.

Are you sure the VAM designation is correct?

There was no vam designation on the holders. I have attached pictures of the coins.

PS Here is one more coin.

    You cherried 2 "TRU_Ts"?

    Awesome!!!

The first one looks suspiciously non-BU to me. The other one looks more like MS63. Either way, though, I have a feeling you probably deserve a YOU SUCK! out of this!
