TPG Virgin Choosing a TPG...

I tried asking this on the end of an older thread that sort of touched on the topic, but it got lost... any help, direction or opinions on this would be appreciated:

I'm about to plunge [use a TPG]! Ay opinions to update this older thread [link below]? I'm sitting on some unprotected proof Buffs and some Spouses that I feel I'd prefer have in graded slabs at this point. I'm not a flipper, so dollar for dollar NGC may suit my needs, but dollar more for dollar more PCGS?
In my thinking it's $99 for 5 freebies (NGC) vs $199 for 8 freebies (PCGS).

And Happy Holidays! image

  • Personally, I prefer PCGS for proof material. I like how the coins look in the slabs compared to NGC.
  • PCGS is worth the premium submission cost. Just look at completed listings for identical coins in both slabs, and you can clearly see where your extra money went on the sub.

If you are interested in SAVING money, and not MAKING money... then you have the facts to make your decision. Cheers, RickO

He said he is not a flipper. However, since he probably wont be buried with his coins, and hence "cant take them with him" , eventually they will be sold at some point. Either by him, or his family. Why not spend the extra few dollars now, and reap the reward when that time does come? There are ALWAYS exceptions to every rule, however, for the majority of cases, PCGS coins outperform NGC coins.
  • I appreciate the advice. PCGS is only $5 more per slab which in the long run makes it the easy choice. Plus I don't care for the NGC white slabs myself very much, though I'll take any freebies or deals in them.

Thanks gang. You're always good to me!

Isn't asking this question on a PCGS message board a bit of a loaded question? Or are you also asking the same question ATS as well....

    Did someone say virgin?

Joey B. says use PCGS, or you'll end up in the slammer.

  • It wasn't intended to be a loaded question at all. It's been asked here before in older threads with fair and honest feedback; I just wanted fresh feedback (not from a 3 year old thread I dusted off). PCGS/CU seem confident enough in their products to allow NGC/other TPG conversations to go on here, so I don't see this as any different. Plus I'm sure enough of you do biz on both sides of the street. The only place I practice monogamy is in my marriage.

But if Joey B says PCGS, my choice is made! And yes, I said virgin. image Thanks again for the feedback!

I don't hang out across the street, but I would love to know what kind of response you would get on this question if you posited it over there... image

  • Eh, I'd feel like a creep doing it just to post the results here - you guys gave me the answer I already knew. Plus I've never signed up for / used their boards. However if anyone does feel free to copy & paste my original and report it back... have at'er. In fact that just goes to show me I owe it to PCGS to bed down with them for my first time, as much education and entertainment I get here. Worth the fee and then some!

If I was not so involved with the PCGS registry I would seriously consider ANACS. They just updated their slab for the second time in as many years and it is much improved. It's about the same size as the PCGS slab, it is clear unlike NGC and it has the nice label on top.

This would only be if you don't care about the registry and do not intend to sell anytime soon. Otherwise PCGS is the only way I would go right now.

I too do not like the white slabs at NGC and for circulated gold they often over grade in my opinion by 1 or 2 points.

With the coins you mentioned you'll get statisticly at least 9 out of 10 69s. NGC will give you 2/3 70s. But your coins will be properly graded with PCGS. --Jerry
