Okay, I'd be lying if I said I don't care wht happens to its value, but this is definitely one for my collection.

As an investor and a collector, I have no intention to flip the coins but I may sell one in a few years, or I may not. I didn't load up on this issue, simply because they will be abundant in the aftermarket for years - unlike the 2004 Proofs, 2005 Proofs, 2006-W Burnished Uncs, 2007-W Burnished Uncs, the 2006 Gold Anniversary Sets, the 2006-W fractional AGEs, and the 2007-W AGEs in general.
Thus, my choice would be: I'm buying them to keep, but hey, I'm not stupid, either.
I knew it would happen.

you dont think these will be around for 100years? 250000 ase sets. and 30000 of the 10th. ann. plats.even if there is 10000 hard lined plat. collectors, theres still less than all tthe rest. not to mention the value of the 20th. silver set. and not to mention the 10th. silver set, you know the 1995w that sells for thousands of dollars, and that will be around forever.
so why now all of a sudden will these not be a grand slam? ill take my chances and go with my gut feeling, if it stabilizes on real world money, i may keep it,or i may send it back. if there stupid moon money being paid, well than i guess my matte proof lincoln set will be getting some new roomates.
it will be intresting to see what happens in the next 30 days....

Gotta watch the wreck.
LOL
Adam, I'd like this set to be a Grand Slam, in the bottom of the ninth, in the 7th game of the World Series. My gut tells me that it won't be that good, but I don't think that it'll be a disappointment either. I predict this one will be a ground rule double with a runner on 1st and 1 out...................and the game ain't over, either!
I knew it would happen.
very nice. i mean theres already sets on ebay for over $1000 from the mints price. and some are selling. even if they dont shoot up to douvle the value, i see $2500-3000 for a sealed ungraded set by mid jan. early feb.
itll be very intresting to see what happens. if you guys find any bringing crazy money, post the info. this will be fun to watch.
adam
It should be interesting to see what happens to pricing after the mint stops their sales of the issue. It's been very soft on eBay so far.

<< <i>I wouldn't want to be a flipper since the Plat coin market is way down right now. Lots of bargins on the 2006 W UNC's and the 2004 w proofs in 1/10 ounce is selling for under $800 on Ebay again. Collect them if you like them but I won't feel sorry when the whining starts just like the old hags they can't lose >>
Sounds pretty dismal in here . I guess Wondercoin and Modern Coin Mart are going to take a real beating then since they offered to buy them above Mint cost
I thought the set looked cool and just had to have one.

Yes and just like the other keys, prices change rapidly. Look at what they paid for the old hags when they first came out, if your a flipper I'd take the few bucks now and not wait until they double. It the mint opens these up like they are sure to do then they will pay the mint price if they are even interested. Wondercoins a great guy but not stupid and I bet he's not buying the 2004 W proofs for what he was 6 months ago or the 2006 W UNC's since they can be had 20 to 25 percent cheaper today.
He's just locked out of the market at present with the limit of 1. It's funny how you hype all these mint coins; the old hags come to mind I'd rather have the 1oz 2006 W UNC for the same money and it's a much rarer coin (key). JMO
I just feel that middle class america is feeling the pince of higher food, insurance, CC debt, utilities, gas, etc and we're the ones that have been driving the market. I'm not saying you'll lose on the deal since Plat prices is likely to take care of the problem. I'm just saying don't expect to make a couple grand off of it.
They are most likely filling orders, probably under contract, to go to TV - once they fill the order........done, wrap it up.
When the buying (music) stops , then it's time to worry.
if someone offered to buy 500 or 1000 sets from you at, let's say, 2500,
it's not a stretch to pay 2150-2200 per set....
why? why would some buyer do this?
limits of course.

Since the 2006-W platinum final mintage is still unknown, that depends on whose numbers you believe. Going by the figures reported in Coin World the 2007-W APE sales figures are still lower than the 2006-W except for the 1/10.
2006-W sales reported in Coin World:
1oz = 4,275
1/2oz = 3,800
1/4oz = 3,625
1/10oz = 4,775
Latest 2007-W sales figures:
1oz = 3,714
1/2oz = 3,655
1/4oz = 3,577
1/10oz = 5,722
I would rather be buying the 2007-W 1oz at this point. Of course if you believe the numbers reported in this forum, then the 2006-W APE mintage is still lower. I also feel the AGE & APE burnished W despite the low mintage compared to the bullion non-W issues issues just have not caught on with the collectors of those series which is why the Proofs have more sales and are more in demand. That being the reason why I feel the Proof First Spouse gold coins will all do well given the historically low mintage for the Proofs.
Incorrect.
Let's not get into that discussion again.
07W PLATS have surpassed 06W sales already.
IMO, the reason why PLATS have been suffering, as well as other coins in the 1,000 to 5,000 range is for lack of cash in the marketplace. The economy is taking it's toll on these coins as well.
Talk to any dealer and ask them where thier bread and butter has been for the past 3-6 months.....BULLION baby. Not rare coins.
They are grading out POORLY at PCGS.
The other potential problem is - as prices for Plat bullion are now hovering around 1540/oz and the USM First Tier buyers of bullion have to commit to a large quantity with no returns, at a premium over melt, the 07W's become attractive from a bullion perspective.
I think the sales numbers could substantially increase, sellout remaining stock if the Platinum bullion price starts to approach 1600/oz
The only issue is when the Mint pulls them for repricing, or if they sellout before repricing.
<< <i>Well having collected the Plat proofs since 2001 I'd say there's more demand because it a long series (1997) with most being modestly priced. The UNC's just haven't been around long enough to create demand and if you didn't get the 2006 then you have a major expense right off the bat. There's only so much money most of us want to put in moderns. >>
It also may be collectors are waiting out until confirmed final mintages are known. Once that happens I would expect a sharp increase in demand for either the 2006-W or 2007-W depending on which is presently lower. So if you have an opinion one way or the other, now is the time to act IMO. Either way you will have a very rare coin given the historically low mintage APE figures which are among the lowest of any US coin. I have noticed the pricing on the 2006-W issues has been dropping except for the 1/10oz which is a lock for the lowest mintage.
Batter up!
Current mintage announced........15,840. Strike 1!
Platinum near all time highs @ $1,534.00/oz...........Ball 1!
Don't count this DOA just yet. The mint is still offering them.
................Strike 2!
Have never bought anything platinum till now.
I thought the set looked cool and just had to have one.
.......................Ball 2!
I just feel that middle class america is feeling the pince of higher food, insurance, CC debt, utilities, gas, etc and we're the ones that have been driving the market. I'm not saying you'll lose on the deal since Plat prices is likely to take care of the problem. I'm just saying don't expect to make a couple grand off of it.................Strike 3!
2 outs!
Well sports fans, it looks like it's coming down to the wire........the tying run is on 1st, and there are 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth here in the 7th game.
Who will the Mint send up to the plate to win the game for the Plats? They've already used the Burnished finishes and "W" mintmarks ad infinitum. They've already used their ace hitter, Reverse Proof. Ah, it's our favorite bad ball hitter - 2008! Can he turn this tense situation around?
I knew it would happen.
Plus, a first strike label might make it stand out from the 30,000 mintage crowd.
And, a lucky 70 could really make my day!
<< <i>Flippers got to be bummed the mint will be selling the remaining sets until there sold out. >>
Since I sent in my sets to PCGS for the First StrikeSM designation it makes no difference to me as the sets shipped after 30 days don't qualify for the designation. I never expected the Mint to cut sales short anyway. Actually I think it's better since I expected a complete sellout by the end of the year. The fact that they have not soldout and the Mint will continue to offer them just means less sets will be shipped within the 30 day window and the First StikeSM population will be limited to less than 4,000 sets total IMO.
<< <i>What might be a saving grace for 07W PLATS is condition rarity.
They are grading out POORLY at PCGS. >>
Actually I wouldn't exactly say that as I have a bucket of plat 07Ws but had to really work to get 06Ws in 70. I will say that I had to return quite a few due to a consistant pin mark/gouge on the reverse of almost all of the $100W uncs. I do think the Mint has scewed up the platinum coins by their insane offerings. The unc 07Ws should have been long gone and they are partially why the rev is slow to sellout since many jumped on them hoping to capture some of the 06W magic. My thoughts are if it can be screwed up then the US Mint will find a way to do it.

unless Platinum goes through the roof (or Gold.. although they both pulled back a bit on 12/31/2007).. and the Mint yanks them off sale and re-prices them higher and puts them back on sale later.. which they have been known to do.. or they raise the order limits to 10 or 100 in which case i think Dealers will gobble them up and they'll be gone in short order.. just a hunch.. could be wrong..
and to be clear to folks who may have confusion about the "30 day" rule.. you don't have to get your set to PCGS within 30 days of receiving it.. it just has to be shipped to YOU by The Mint within 30 days of when they first started shipping them.. so as long as your sealed box shipping label is dated 12/21/2007 to 1/21/2008 (i think 12/21/2007 was the first day they shipped them, DESPITE The Mint's sales page saying they'd start shipping on 12/31/2007, which it STILL says..).. then you can submit them whenever you want to and still get "First Strike" as long as you don't open the freakin' box and look at the coins you paid two grand for.. sigh.. can you think of anything else (non-coin) that you ever or would ever pay that much for and not even take it out of the box to look at it or use it?..
when does The Mint's fiscal year end? anyone know?.. did they start shipping these 10 days early just so they could hit those cards and get some millions of last-minute DollErs in sales on the books for 2007?.. because it was VERY strange timing to release a special $2000.00 set right on the tail end of xmas shopping madness when people were busy maxing out their plastic buying crap for friends and family.. then again, a $2000.00 set is not exactly the kind of product they would target towards yer average coin collector anyway.. the US DollEr might be in the toilet, but two grand is still very serious money to most middle-class folks..

i won a PCGS PR70 DCAM 2006-S $5 SF Old Mint Gold off TeleTrade a few weeks ago.. when i got it, it didn't take more than a couple seconds to notice a visible frost break or tiny hit on the building near one of the windows.. the size of a pin point but it jumped out at me like a floodlight.. i don't know what the PCGS grader(s) were drinking that day but 70 means perfect and that hit was completely visible without a loupe.. that coin should have graded 69.. just tilt the coin in any kind of light and it was easily visible.. i returned it to TeleTrade and got my money back.. so in MY opinion, PCGS ain't as tight and conservative as the market would have one believe.. i have a couple NGC 70 Moderns and they truly ARE without flaw, and yet they'd sell for one tenth the money than if they were in PCGS plastic..

My thoughts on collecting platinum coins and the 10th anniversary proof set:
I started on a limited basis to collect platinum coins about one year ago when I read about the limited mintages for the 2006-W platinum coins on this forum. I started selling all of my Silver Eagle proofs as well as other yearly coin sets to use that money for platinum purchases. I had also purchased 5 sets of the ASE reverse proof sets, grading two sets. I had one perfect PF70 reverse proof which was a beautiful looking coin. However, after reading about milk spots on silver coins, and even after keeping these coins in intercept boxes, I did not feel comfortable long term holding onto these silver reverse proofs. I made a decision at that time to buy a platinum reverse proof to keep no matter what the mintages were.
I plan to keep the reverse proof as well as purchasing one or two $50 platinum coins each year. I might even try to purchase some of the previous year proofs since the changing reverse sides looks like a very nice coin.
Why am I writing this? This is to let the serious collectors know if I am an example, that there is a new base of platinum collectors developing that hopefully will spur interest in collecting platinum. I will keep on reading the very good information on this forum. Thanks for the great data.

<< <i> How many have received theirs? I got my order in the first 15 minutes but it still has not shipped. >>
My ten sets were ordered late since they were "originally placed at 11:58" - If you guys recall the mint website was not displaying the add to cart until 12:06ish. I had my coins preloaded in the cart and I waited until 12:02 to hit the submits. My emails and order confirmation page show that I ordered at 12:02.
My feeling is that the mint servers were/are 5-6 minutes slow. This is why the coins were not available until 12:06 and why my coins "were placed at 11:58".
Anyway, I reordered later that afternoon - 2-3ish, and all my sets arrived on the 27th.
By the way, 5 of them should be arriving at PCGS any day now.

You are right but I made some good money on the silver and gold 20th annv sets.
Right now, I don't have the time/inclination to do it by "nickel and diming" a set at a time.
