First one may have been cleaned, second one looks fine. Grades seem about right.

When are hairlines, the result of cleaning and not circulation? The first coin, yes does have a few hairlines, but this coin also circulated a fair amount. Take a brand new silver coin, such as an unc 64 Kenedy and throw it in your pocket until it wears down to an XF and see if it doesnt have few hairlines from rubbing agains other objects in your pocket, not to mention a little bit of dirt or sand that may end up in your pocket. The obverse seems hairlined, but the reverse seems fine. Maybe at some point in the coin's life, one person slid the coin obverse down across a rough merchant counter to pay for a purchase. Is this really cleaning?

  • Good point JJ. Furthermore, which coin is more valuable: a lightly hairlined VF30, or a completely original VF25. Because it seems to me that 2-3 months in my pocket would knock it down 5 points or so, but rid it of any hairlining.

The cleaning practically jumps off the image on the first coin. Keeping a coin in one's pocket with keys and other coins will generate random contact marks.

However, on cleaned coins, you see many small hairlines which are nearly parallel to one another in the open areas of the coin, like we see here. You'll also often see that the protected areas are noticeably darker than the fields.

    "Sou Mangueira......."
  • Keep the first one in your pocket for a few months with some BB's, they are round and won't put any marks on the coin. It's a hassle changing pants though.
