Ever been offered/buy a really neat coin you weren't even looking for??

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,426 ✭✭✭✭✭
I bought one this week.

I was looking for a specific coin and an example was mailed to me. The dealer included a second coin and said I shouldn't pass up on the opportunity to acquire it.

After checking it out and talking with him, I bought the second coin and returned the one I was looking for. image

What a crazy hobby. image

I welcome things like this as long as they are from a dealer who knows me and with whom I've done business before. Sometimes opportunities come up to acquire a special coin and it helps to have a dealer thinking of you.

Yes - just today as a matter of fact.

Happened to me about three weeks ago.

I completely fell in love with it and I would have been sad if I passed.

Mine is gold and pre-1792. If the deal goes thru - i will have it next week to show
  • At coin shows, yes....many times I will strike up a conversation with a dealer and he will go on to show me a really cool something...most of the time it is in a series that I have no idea about.

Ok, but I'm warning you that it's not anything U.S. or remotely modern as far as numismatics go. My X-Mas present.

I picked up an Ancient very similar to this: LOOK

    I just love it!!!

I was looking for a gold Ancient Pre-300AD, but never expected anything Pre-AD or from Brutus' reign.

I know this is slightly more common of gold ancients, but I still love design and how circular the planchets are + it's gold!!! Reminds me of the American Eagle on U.S. coins too.

    Goldeneye:

    I don't have a pic.

I am working on a 6 piece "regional" territorial type set and needed a Mormon piece to complete it (Carolina, Georgia, Co. Ca., Ore. Utah).

The Clark Gruber he included was even better. So, even though I already had a mountain $10, I bought the $5 Clark/Gruber instead.

Two years into my search for an MS 65 Barber Half, I was offered a 15 D (a type coin) in PC 6. It was right around Thanksgiving, I had a property tax payment due imminently and no add'l funds, so I passed on the coin. I finally found my Barber Half 16 months later.

In February of 2006 I bought 258,000 coins that I wasn't even looking for.

Sometimes you just can't resist a attractive looking opportunity. image

I bought this 1936 Satin proof cent back in 2003. I was at the Central Florida coin club's show in Orlando. I wasn't looking for anything in particular since I had just finished buying a 1942 proof set one coin at a time. This coin was in the dealer's case by itself with no price sticker. I had never seen a satin proof so I asked to see it. The dealer just bought it and told me he had never had one in inventory before. I thought it was neat so I bought it. It is in an ANACS holder as a RB but it is 95% red with no carbon spots.

    In a way...... sort of.....

I went to a local coin show this weekend and the first dealer hands me a box to go through. It was extremely hard to stay focused onj my series with all these other random coins in there: Lincoln 22 plain date, a 65 Stone Mountain commem, 32s Wash (63), ..... and many more.

Well, I ended up buying a very lonesome 08-s Barber quarter for bid!!
