  • AU53. Scan kills the luster, so I can't comment on whether it's cleaned or not, but the images make it appear that it might have been.

I think 53 is honest and accurate.

$1 gold are notorious for weak strikes and poor hair details.

Nice coin. At 13mm, this is the smallest coin ever produced by the US. The 1850 is a better date that can be found at a common date price.

What the others said. Looks okay to me. Probably nicer in hand, with a little luster that the scanner probably washed out.

  • be very careful buying these raw--especially from a less reliable source like a flee market.

    There are lots of counterfeits.

Nice looking coin.... price would determine how good the deal was..... 'appears' it may have been cleaned. Cheers, RickO

If the price was right, I like it. $1 gold pieces are cool...so tiny! Nice job! image

I agree. They are called flee markets for that very reason - you should do exactly that before buying coins.
  • Hi all
There are no real B&M shop's in my town.
My coin dealer has a place at the flee market.
He had a B&M shop in Pittsburgh for many years
but sold out his half to his partner and started selling at the flee market.
He has been in the coin business for about 40 years.
I have been buying coins off of him for about 6 or 8 years now
and I trust him. He has sent some coins in to be graded
for me and all have come back the grade he said they would.
He has taught me many things and has showed me a few fakes
and how to tell they are fakes.
When I give an E-bay allert to fake coins on E-bay he has tiped me off to them
and ask me to tell my friends here.

Thank You all for listening to me.
