<< <i>Russ, thats kind of the point. Had Jonathon notified the seller he was not happy, there most likely have been a refund and NOBODY would have gotten dinged. Do you get it now? >>

I've gotten it all along. But, you made it painfully obvious that you don't get it when you posted this:

<< <i>This seller has a 99.9 positive with over 10,000 feedbacks. That means just 1 of every 1,000 of his customers is not happy. >>

As long as sellers are allowed to withhold feedback so they can retaliate, the numbers are meaningless.

i've always subscribed to the saying thast says if you break down the word assume you make an ass-out-of-u-and-me. strangely, a few members are more than willing to assume much about the seller. so it goes at the forum......................

I STILL appreciate that the seller has a set, and isn't afraid to use the feedback system for what it was intended - feedback.

And Russ is right - if retaliatory feedback were not allowed, things would change - and I would hazard a guess that even great sellers would get a little more negative feedback - but crap sellers would be inundated.

The star rating system does show the item described status, if thats any consolation. Less than 4.5 stars is iffy IMO, and I ignore the shipping price star, some folks expect it to be shipped free, I know

Mark Feld has started a thread on this Across the Street.

apparently it's so slow at SleepyHollow that they need to get thread ideas from lurking here!!!!image the only thing i find disconcerting about this is that Jonathan apparently could have requested a picture and didn't, while the seller is taken to task because of his alleged misleading description.

i have afairly simple solution that prevents things like this from happening-----if i ask a seller a question or request information/pictures and receive no answers to my satisfaction, i simply delete the auction and move on.

I'm not convinced the seller did anything wrong to deserve that neg. .....other than a poorly or hastily worded auction. Perhaps 'guilty' of omission of some details....

.... but when you did not see a picture of the back.... why didn't you ask for one?

Then when you were not satisfied, you did not contact the guy to give him a chance at an explaination... or refund?? Instead, you silently wait and then attempt a drive by negative??

I do somewhat admire your enthusiasm to make the world a better place and to make a stand on this. But I just cannot agree with it. I also make mistakes on my auction listings. But ALWAYS try to make things right when anyone is not satisfied for any reason. I have to say that I dread to have bidders like you that will not give me a chance.... ! ( and that HAS happened to me before).

Save the negatives and your battles for those who truely deserve it..... without a doubt.

  • Heck I've got 6500+ with 3 negs.

One was from a guy who bought same product from me and and another guy. Other guys was used, mine new in box........he negged us both with same statement about used item!! Cost of item.........$4.00!!

Other 2 negs were simply knee jerk feedback from rookies who didn't read auction. No contact before negs, never responded to offer of full refund including S/H both ways!!

Total value of all 3 items??................$35!!

Three examples of why the seller shouldn't leave the first feedback.

  • Usually, a neutral will get you a retaliatory negative.

I am not doubting the accuracy of this statement, BUT, do you have any data that supports this view? That is, is this your opinion or a demonstrable fact?

Its my perspective that sellers should leave positive feedback if a buyer pays relatively quickly. They held up their end of the bargain, why not? If someone is displeased with their purchase, I do what I can to remedy the situation, hopefully to their satisfaction. If they leave a justified negative fine- I deserved it. But I kind of bristle at sellers who don't leave positives without the buyer leaving it first.

On the other hand retaliatory feedback such as you've described is disappointing, though it happens. Either eat crow on purchases such as these and don't leave any feedback at all, or drop the 'negative' and take your chances. You always can reply to the feedback to clarify that the feedback was retaliatory. Most members who look at this against your record will realize that you encountered a jerk. There are a lot of 'em out there.

Another alternative is you could seek his approval to have both removed, though I tend to look poorly on that, especially if it occurs multiple times.
    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!
  • Leaving feedback first is fine but as I described in earlier message sometimes you are simply dealing with irrational people and your ability to leave a negative for them needs to be preserved as a warning to other sellers and as an education to the buyer.

I take my feedback/reputation very seriously and I still hate that I got 3 undeserved negs out of 6500 feedback. Again for 3 items with a total value of $35!!!

<< <i>After 9 1/2 years and 800+ feedback, I just got my first negative. Oh, well.

I bought a medal from seller ellison_enterprises, paying less than $15 including shipping. He described the medal as silver, when it was truly some sort of white metal. He said the (unpictured) reverse was blank, which was mostly true if you didn't count the huge gouges. He didn't mention the rim dings. I decided that I didn't want to give him a chance to sell the same item to someone else, so I left the negative to reinforce the other item-not-as-described negatives that he had received.

If you think that accurate descriptions are important, you might want to avoid seller ellison_enterprises.

(Isn't there supposed to be a time limit after which you can't leave feedback? He left me retaliatory negative feedback today (12/8) for an item that closed 7/23.)

    Bummer for me. >>

This is seller is truly an axx................

What if the buyer wants a refund and sends you a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT coin back? Had you done what you believe in (leave buyer feedback upon receipt of payment) now what recourse do you have? As a seller, the transaction is complete when the customer is happy. The customer lets me know he is happy when he leaves me positive feedback. I then reciprocate immediately. When I purchase something, and im happy with it, I leave positive feedback to the seller. They usually reciprocate immediately, and if they dont, i'll politely remind them via email.
