Hi all,
Have learned much while on this forum and would like to give back a little something during the holiday period.
I'm taking guesses on the weight of the pennies in my pennyjar(including the 5 gallon glass water bottle)
I did this scientifically by putting it on a bathroom scale.


so take a guess and I'll put all correct entries (to nearest pound) in a hat and draw winner.
If nobody guesses right on I'll take closest over or under.

You have until midnight December 2nd so get guessing.
One final guess per person please... you may change your guess if you change your mind, but only get one guess.

The giveaway will be a 2006 Ben Franklin Commemorative Coin and Chronicles set.

I would estimate the weight to be 102 pounds

I believe that 100 pennies equal 1 pound +-
So take the weight of the jug that is empty, then weigh again with the pennies. Subtract, and you will have a rough estimate of the dollar value.

PS I had a glass jug like that years ago. When I went to pick it up by the handle, the entire bottom broke off clean from the weight of the coins. I had one
big pile of coins on the floor, and an empty jug in hand.



I would advise to pick up the jug by the bottom to ensure that this does not happen to you

Ok, hmmmm, you could lift this onto a scale? Not quite full? Ok, full it would weigh 98 pounds including
the bottle. Now, since it is only 85.6% full (by my guesstimate) I'd say that you have a weight of:

Years ago, a local 7-11 store had a bottle like that filled with water. People donated coins by placing them down the neck and would win a prize if your coin landed on a small glass placed upside down on the bottom of the big jug. It was so popular that a puddle would form around it from the displaced water. Then, one day, the coin that 'broke the camels back' was inserted and the whole jug cracked, fell and spilled contents all over the floor. Nobody was hurt.

Formula and Answer

(Answer: Approximately 7771 cents fill a gallon space.)

Step two: How many gallons in your jar?

(Guess: 4.3)

Step three: Calculate total number of cents likely to be in a 4.3 gallon space.

(Answer: 7771 x 4.3 = 33,415 cents)

Step four: Calculate how much 33,415 cents weigh.

Wheaties weigh 3.11 grams each and post-1982 cents weigh 2.5 grams

(Answer (blending different weights): 33,415 x average weight of, say, 2.55 grams per cent = 85,208 grams)

Step five: Convert grams to pounds

Formula for converting grams to pounds

(Answer: 85,208 x 0.0022 = 187.45 pounds)

Step six: Post Guess

(Guess: 187 pounds)

Step seven: Slap forehead in disbelief

I thought of using the pennies as a rough size guide and trying to determine the size but I come up with everything from 1.6 to 9 gallons. I'll split the difference between my more likely results and call it 190.
