$10K to buy coinz with!!

BAJJERFANBAJJERFAN Posts: 31,225 ✭✭✭✭✭
If you had $10K to buy coins with that might double or triple in value over the next several years [not guaranteed I know] what would you buy? Also consider that short term moves would be acceptable if profits are there. Please spare the coins aren't investments comments cuz I already know that, the money isn't mine and its not like its someone's last $10K. This is mad money that could be spent on coins anyway, the only thing being that the coins are being bought for their appreciation potential and not to fill a hole in a Dansco.

Would toned Morgans be considered as good choices? DMPLS?

I would invest in scarce St. Gaudens double eagles... probably could not get a good one for $10K, but the best I could find. Cheers, RickO

  • 10k in silver bullion might outperform any coin in the short term.

Me, I would put it toward a 1909 mint set I am working on! Maybe even blow it all on a ridiculously nice 1909 IHC. So, if you are looking to unload 10k on someone, please pick me!

    WORLD COINS...

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • The exceptionally nice DMPLs that people are willing to pay dearly for don't come up for sale that often.
Short term: silver bullion might be best. Longer (>5 years): Seated Liberty dollars in AU58 (but with MS63-64 eye appeal), MS64RD large cents, a nice EF-AU 18th-century large cent.

engelhard silver bullion. i do not see coins increasing in price
in the 1-10,000 range. they already have doubled, tripled, and
    etc...

i would rather see silver go from 15 to 18-20.

    i am with gecko.

too many people here see the coin market with rose colored glasses.
this coin thing is played out.
you need to start acting like a dealer and try to get rips.
be it antique stores, from joe public, or obscure auctions where not
every person there knows the value of most everything.

Keith...how's that coming along? I remember some you got from Rick Snow while I was standing next to you at LB in Feb '06. They were nice!

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

If it were me doing something like you are asking, Tom, I would likely get 1-2 1916d mercs in lower, more "affordable, grades (G4-VG10) and maybe a few lincoln keys as well.
Any series I thought was going to do well, or keep doing well, I would think about the key.

If we are talking about coins only I'd pick:

    1. 1854-55 MS65 quarter
    2. 1854-55 MS65 half
    3. 1873-74 MS65 quarter

One of items 1 or 2, and an item 3. Choice orig coins only. That eliminates 80% of what is usually offered. These coins have not doubled or tripled in the past 10 years and are still good values imo esp. compared to registry sets and 18th or 20th century material.

    1-pcgs/ngc 1916d merc dimes.
    2-pcgs/ngc 1909s vdb cents.
    3-1879cc gsa dollars in holders.

The mentionables above have always performed quite well for me... image
  • Are ultra rare patterns (2-12 known) a decent investment? Or are those just too obscure for their own good? The reason I ask is that there are numerous of these for under 10k.
  • If I had 10 grand I would buy $4000 in 10 ounce silver bars, $3000 in gold bullion or certified pre-1933 common gold, and spend the other $3000 on a nice Draped bust coin.

    1893 S $1
I seldom check PM's but do check emails often jason@seated.org

Buying top quality Seated Dimes in Gem BU and Proof.

Buying great coins - monster eye appeal only.
  • I'd buy modern gold NCLT for as much below melt as possible. Bullion, commems, grade wouldn't matter, pure speculation on gold.
