Is anyone collecting the Presidential Proofs?

I know it's not a "classic" series, it's not even a year old yet, and so a lot of people put them down, but is anyone willing to admit they collect the Presidential dollar proof coins? I think in proof they look pretty nice. I know how much a set costs from the Mint, but does collecting them slabbed, say, PCGS PR69 make them too expensive?

  • I wouldn't say I'm collecting them, it's more on the lines of 'I have them' since I buy Clad/Silver/Mint sets every year.

But I really do not get all excited about the 'no edge' and other errors these coins have, and I will not even try to aquire those but since they come in the sets I will probably buy a Dansco or some type of book to put a build a set.

You should be able to fing the Proof PR69DCAM in PCGS holders for little more than the grading cost or around $15.00 per coin these are the cast off's of the big time graders that are looking for the 70's that go for big time money.
And yes a few of us are collecting them.

Heck I have been selling the 69 slabs on e-bay for between $5 and $15 depending on the day. If you hunt you could try collecting them in slabs by price. Set a low limit to make it a challenge.

That sounds like a fun idea. Thanks. image

I am not collecting them... would not even consider collecting them. IMO they are less interesting than the state quarters.. which I do not collect either. Cheers, RickO

69's shouldn't be that big of a markup over an uncertified set. The 70's however are.

It is just a good way for the kids to learn about the Presidents. I look at them as teaching tools.image

  • I have the first four that I bought already slabbed. I started off subscribing to a couple of sets, but the quality was so poor that this year's sets went back and I cancel the subscription. I think they can be educational for the grandkids so I'll probably continue to buy slabbed coins if they remain as reasonable as they are now.

  • I agree - the Presidential dollars are less interesting than the state quarters. But of the 3 options available - the proof is by far the nicest looking. A little contrast makes a big difference. I won't do a slabbed set -- but I just might put a book of Presidential proofs together.

Agreed, I lost interest pretty fast in these but it could be fun to put a Dansco album together.

I bought a Dansco (one piece per year) in anticipation of picking the best pieces from BU rolls, but the quality of the coins was so poor I decided to fill the album with Proofs. -Preussen

Yup...each proof is placed in a Lighthouse 3 side view coin capsule. Not going to slab them, but give them to the grandkids down the road. image

Yes, I admit I have begun a set. I could not resist all 4 prezzies in PCGS PR69, First Strike holders for
$56 including shipping. Very pleased and don't think I could do it myself as inexpensively.
